It wasn’t long back that I passed out of school. I clearly remember those days when we used to discuss among our friends about what we want to be in life. I also remember that the initial talks were all tied up with adventure and fun. So one of us wanted to be a pilot, because it is lot of fun to fly in the sky or a rock star, because then every evening we thought would be an enjoyable event. These were the times when we were in the middle school 7th or 8th standard when the fantasies overtook the realities of life, where working was fun and adventurous. As we moved on in life, we realized that life was more realistic, and there were choices to be made, however hard we wanted to keep ourselves away from it, and then I remember the way we made some of our choices, someone wanted to take up science with mathematics, because his closest friend was in the same section, or someone took biology because her father who aspired to be a doctor, but couldn’t fulfill his dream wanted to fulfill it by making his daughter a doctor. After finishing 10th grade and scoring very average marks, I also went the way the world did, we were always told that the brighter guys took science in 11th and I too tried to squeeze into the science section and eventually I got the admission. But two grueling years latter I was just plain lucky to have survived after having made a random decision. In retrospect, my only saving grace was that the subject where I scored marks in 10th were science and mathematics and that’s what I had to learn for the rest of the two years, so looking back at my decision, I can say that although it was a very random decision luckily for me somehow that was the best decision. But during those two years I also realized that not every one survived, lot of my friends who used to score much better in lower classes could not find interest in subjects like calculus, kinetics or inorganic chemistry. The plain simple thing is they were much better in something else. Today people see me as a successful person, a pass out of IIM-Ahmedabad, working with the corporate world, being respected where ever you let people know about your educational background. But just think about this, I spent one year after my 12th preparing for engineering examination, and then got into one. I spent another 4 years completing engineering, and then another 2 years doing MBA before I got a reasonably good job, compared to that think about my smart friend Susheel, who took a better informed decision than me. He after his 10th figured out that Mathematics & Science was not for him, he took up commerce, he knew he had the right aptitude to score well in the subject and that’s what he did. He latter enrolled into Delhi University’s one of the best colleges, and went on to complete MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad, when I just joined. He in turn gained two precious years of advantage. So what does all this mean to you? My only reason of telling this story, is to let you all know that decisions need to be made early in life. It is just the right time when you are in 9th grade to start exploring what you want to do, but the most common question that I have encountered is “How do I explore”? According to me today students have information at just a click of the mouse, so, read as much as you can. Explore opportunities available, figure out what you are good at. Which subject do you enjoy reading / learning? Do you have a relative or senior who has done something interesting? If yes, can you meet him know more about him and his work? Pick up a phone and just call up a college and university that you dream to be a part of, visit the college if possible just to get inspired. These are some of the ways information can be gathered and also keep yourself inspired. I remember the first time I visited IIT-Delhi when I was in 12th, that evening roaming around the campus. I made up my mind I am going to do whatever it takes to make it there but, I failed, and that failure inspired me to plan my future in advance from thereon.
