Aziz Herawi, Memories of Herat "Instrumental Music of Afghanistan " Credits to "shajarian"
*INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF AFGHANISTAN* Afghani music is known for its many styles which reflect the region's ethnic and linguistic diversity as well as occupations that range from sheep herding to urban mercantilism. The Muslim influence on North Indian culture was infused mainly via Afghanistan for over a millennium, and in the last two centuries there has been considerable influence from India back into Afghanistan. Much of the music on this recording is typical of the instrumental styles common in the western city of Heart, and connections with and influences from India are often apparent. The two instruments played by Aziz Herawi are Afghan rubab and the 14 stringed Herati dutar. Both of these are plucked lutes. The Rubab has a short neck, with double chambers and three main playing strings of animal gut *or nylon(. It also features several sets of metal drone and sympathetic strings. The rubab is strongly associated with the Pashtun people and is regarded as the national instrument of Afghanistan. In a contrast, the 14 stringed dutar is a long-necked lute characteristic of the province of Heart. Other instruments played on this recording are the harmonic has been widely used in Afghanistan since the beginning of the 20th century. The zirbaghali is a goblet-shaped, single-headed drum used widely in Afghanistan. The daira frame drum, with sets of small bells or jingles inside the frame, is an instrument traditionally played by Afghan women.
