David Villa helps Spain edge Portugal in battle of Iberia

Vicente del Bosque's side will play Paraguay in the quarter-finals
A David Villa goal was all that separated Spain and Portugal in a tense
second-round encounter in Cape Town.
The result is already being heralded as a triumph for football as the
attractive Spanish style eventually overcame a stubborn Portugal
defence.

Fans were treated to the stylish verve of a sleek Spain side—a stark
contrast to the doggedly-compact Portugal unit.

A mundane first half saw Spain dominate possession but fail to expose
their organised opposition led by Ricardo Carvalho and Bruno Alves.

Alves in particular managed to keep Fernando Torres under close watch
at all times with the Liverpool striker unable to trouble Eduardo apart
from an early effort which was beaten away by the Portuguese goalkeeper.

But while Torres’ performance was subdued, his strike partner impressed
once again.

David Villa’s dynamic runs caused major headaches for Portugal’s right
side all night and the new Barcelona signing gave Catalan fans a
glimpse of the blossoming relationship he already has with current Nou
Camp stars when he linked up with Xavi to score the decisive goal early
in the second half.

Xavi’s neat flick released the lethal number seven and although his
first effort was denied by Eduardo, Villa reacted by sharply scooping
the ball over the goalkeeper and into the roof of the net.

After the setback, Portugal’s lack of attacking prowess became
increasingly evident as Carlos Queiroz’s side failed to muster a
comeback.

Cristiano Ronaldo was deprived of service from an unimaginative
midfield. The perplexed captain looked to Queiroz for instruction but
despite exasperated directions from the coach, Portugal were simply
one-dimensional.

As the match drew to a close, Torres' replacement, Fernando Llorente,
should have made the victory more comfortable when he missed two headed
chances.

Fortunately for Vicente del Bosque and his side, Llorente’s failure to
convert proved inconsequential as Spain sealed their passage into the
last eight after Portugal’s Ricardo Costa was dismissed late on.

Spain were deserved winners, admits Portugal coach

Carlos Queiroz reluctantly conceded that Spain were the deserved
winners after his Portugal side were beaten 1-0 by the Euro 2008
champions in the last 16.
David Villa’s 63-minute strike was all that separated the two sides
after Portugal’s Ricardo Costa was sent off for an off-the-ball
incident involving Joan Capdevila.

“Spain had the better chances and I think, sadly, they deserved to
win,” said Queiroz after the match.

“Spain were much more effective moving the ball around. We were looking
for chances on the counter-attack. We had our chances — we just didn’t
score.”

Cristiano Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure throughout the night after
failing to make any real impact on the match and the Real Madrid star
refused to talk to reporters as he left the stadium in Cape Town.

But Queiroz believes his team can leave South Africa with their heads
held high.

“I believe the fans have justifiable reason to be proud of the way the
team has played,” he added.

“We wanted to do well and when we compete at this level, if we manage
to obtain second or third, it is not satisfactory.

“We showed ambition and desire to win but it just wasn’t possible.
We’ll have to come back stronger.

“We always have as our main goal to win. We also want to have an
honourable performance to dignify Portuguese football.

“I wanted us to be able to leave the field with our heads held high,
and I think we accomplished this.”

Roy Hodgson ‘confirmed as new Liverpool manager’

Roy Hodgson will be confirmed as the new manager of Liverpool tomorrow,
the Liverpool Echo is reporting.
The newspaper claims that Christian Purslow, Liverpool’s Chief
Executive, has been in talks with his Fulham counterpart, Alastair
Mackintosh, for the last 72 hours, and the two finally came to an
agreement in the late hours of Tuesday night.

The Merseyside club will have to pay the Cottagers £2 million in
compensation as a part of the deal which will bring the 62-year-old to
Liverpool.

It has been revealed that the former Inter Milan boss has always been
the favourite to takeover from Rafael Benítez despite other notable
figures being linked to the job including Liverpool legend Kenny
Dalglish and former Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Hodgson's first competitive game in charge at Anfield will be a Europa
League qualifying match in late July against a yet-to-be-determined
opponent.

Tsvetana Pironkova upsets Venus Williams at Wimbledon

Tsvetana Pironkova says beating Venus Williams to reach the semi-finals
of Wimbledon is “like a dream.”
The 22-year-old world No.82 produced an inspired performance to
overcome the five-time Wimbledon champion in straight sets 6-2 6-3 to
set up a semi-final clash with Russia’s Vera Zvonareva.

“It’s like a dream,” Pironkova told BBC Sport after her victory.
“Coming here I never thought I’d play that well and come this far in
the tournament.”

“I think I played pretty well today, I’m very happy with my game.

“I had won one over her before and I actually thought I could win
today, so I was going for it.

The unseeded Bulgarian, who had previously never made it past the first
round at SW19, went on to describe her affection towards The
Championships.

“I love this tournament,” she added. “Every time I come here I enjoy it
a lot.

“I like the atmosphere and I just try to relax and enjoy every moment
that I have here.”

Ipswich manager Roy Keane defends Fabio Capello

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 09:24 AM PDT

Ipswich manager Roy Keane has leapt to the defence of Fabio Capello in
the wake of England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany on Sunday.
Keane, 38, described the Italian manager as “absolutely brilliant.”

“To keep criticising and questioning the manager is crazy,” said the
former Manchester United captain.

“He didn’t do anything wrong in the qualifying campaign and now, all of
a sudden, he’s not the top man any more.”

The Ipswich boss instead laid the blame for England’s miserable
tournament squarely on the players, stating his belief that a squad of
‘good players’ does not necessarily make a ‘good team’.

“People keep talking about world class players but who are they?”

“There’s probably only Wayne Rooney, who had a brilliant season.”

Keane suggested the defensive frailties of the England team were not a
consequence of Capello’s inept tactics. Instead the former Republic of
Ireland international ridiculed the amateur nature of England’s
defending.

Keane said: “The goals they conceded against Germany, particularly the
first couple, had nothing to do with Capello’s choice of system or
tactics. It wasn’t a case of getting overrun in midfield. It was just
very bad defending.”

Liverpool set to name Roy Hodgson as new manager

Liverpool are set to appoint Roy Hodgson as their new manager on
Thursday, with the former Fulham boss refusing to wait for a decision
on Fabio Capello's future with England.
It is believed that Christian Purslow, Liverpool's Chief Executive, has
always had Hodgson at the top of his list of potential candidates,
despite interest in the job from former Real Madrid manager Manuel
Pellegrini and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.

The club have been quick to speed up the appointment after the former
Inter Milan boss was linked with the England job after Fabio Capello's
future was brought into question following a disappointing World Cup
campaign.

Hodgson's first job at Anfield will be to deal with bids for a number
of the team’s star players including captain Steven Gerrard and Spain
striker Fernando Torres.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho and Club President Florentino Pérez
have both expressed interest in bringing the Liverpool captain to the
Spanish capital and are believed to be ready to table a
take-it-or-leave-it offer of £20million for the Huyton-born midfielder.

Meanwhile both Chelsea and Barcelona are believed to be interested in
striker Fernando Torres, who is valued at over £60million.

But with both clubs being well aware of the poor financial situation at
Anfield they may put in considerably smaller bids for Torres, who is
currently at the World Cup with Spain.

Should both players depart from Anfield there is no promises from the
board that the manager would be given the proceeds of sales to spend in
the transfer market, meaning Hodgson may be forced to wheel and deal in
order to replace any outgoing players.

Malouda admits France players were ‘wrong’ to strike

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 05:00 AM PDT

France winger Florent Malouda has admitted that he and his teammates
made the wrong decision when opting to go on strike at the World Cup.
Nicolas Anelka was sent home following a heated half-time argument with
coach Raymond Domenech during France’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico and
following the match the French squad took Anelka’s side and boycotted
training the next day.

On reflection however, Malouda, 30, says it was the wrong decision.

“We were in a state of mind where we were reacting to something,”
Malouda told Sky Sports News.

“That was the wrong decision. Now it’s over and we’re thinking about
the future.

France suffered a 2-1 defeat in their final group match against hosts
South Africa and the Chelsea winger blamed low morale within the squad
for the disappointing result.

“It was like we didn’t know how to get a result,” he continued. “The
most important thing was that we didn’t know how to work on the
confidence.

“There was a loss of confidence on the pitch. We were trying to find a
solution but didn’t know where to start.”

“To get the results you have to restart the confidence, the manager and
the work you’re putting in training.”

The midfielder is now looking forward to a new era under new manager
Laurent Blanc.

“I hope he can turn things in a positive way,” he added.

“There is a lot of expectation and people are aware that is it going to
be difficult.

“We need that, the nation needs that. I hope he is going to be the man
for the situation and he has everyone’s help.”

Villa defends Torres form ahead of Portugal clash

Spain striker David Villa has defended Fernando Torres’ form at the
World Cup ahead of Spain’s last 16 encounter with Portugal tonight.
Villa, who joined Barcelona from Valencia before the World Cup got
underway, believes Torres’ contributions have been crucial, despite the
Liverpool star failing to get on the scoresheet in South Africa.

“First of all I haven’t really heard any criticism of Fernando and I
certainly don’t share a view of his performances being lacklustre,”
said Villa.

“Perhaps he hasn’t scored a goal but he’s done spectacular work.

“He really is very happy in the squad, he’s made an enormous effort to
help this team.”

Torres missed the end of Liverpool’s season after undergoing knee
surgery in April and Villa says he has done well to get himself fit in
time for the South Africa tournament.

“Let’s remember what state he was in with his knee a month ago,” Villa
continued.

“He is supporting the team with his play, so I’m very thankful to him
and I think his performances have been very good.

“He is doing some excellent work, but forwards are always measured by
the goals they score and I’m totally convinced that if he continues
working as well as he is, he will score goals.”

FIFA president apologises to England and Mexico

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 02:46 AM PDT

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has apologised to England and Mexico after
both sides were on the receiving end of refereeing mistakes on Sunday.
Blatter, 74, also said that the issue of goal-line technology would be
put back on FIFA’s agenda following the World Cup.

“I apologised to England and Mexico,” Blatter said. “The English said
‘thank you’ and accepted that you can win [some] and you lose [some],
and the Mexicans bowed their head and accepted it.”

“It is obvious that after the experience so far in this World Cup it
would be a nonsense to not reopen the file of technology at the
business meeting of the International FA Board in July.

“Personally I deplore it when you see evident referee mistakes but it’s
not the end of a competition or the end of football, this can happen.

“We will naturally take on board the discussion on technology and have
first opportunity in July at the business meeting.”

But the FIFA president emphasised that the governing body would only
consider introducing goal-line technology, not video replays.

“The only principle we are going to bring back for discussion is
goalline technology,” he added.

“Football is a game that never stops and the moment there was a
discussion if the ball was in or out, or there was a goalscoring
opportunity, do we give a possibility to a team to call for replays
once or twice like in tennis?

“For situations like the Mexico game you don’t need technology.”
