Reports had suggested that the Milan striker had flown to England in order to hold talks with an English club, with Manchester rivals City and United both touted as potential destinations for the 26-year-old. But according to reports in Il Corriere dello Sport the former PSV Eindhoven front man is ready to begin negotiations with Liverpool. Should the Reds secure Huntelaar’s services it would make him the fourth major signing of the summer at Anfield following the arrivals of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanović and Danny Wilson. It is believed AC Milan will be looking to bring Dutch winger Ryan Babel to the San Siro as a part of the deal after Babel suffered a poor season at Anfield and failed to hold down a place in Rafael Benítez's first-team squad. AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri helped fuel the rumours after telling the Italian press “Huntelaar, for now, is a Milan player,” Meanwhile Manchester City have said they have had no approach for full-back Wayne Bridge after the 29-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield following the departure of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina. Reports suggest Bridge is worried about his chances of first-team football at Eastlands after City opened negotiations with Lazio defender Alexander Kolarov. But the announcement by City that Liverpool have yet to make a formal approach would suggest that the Anfield club could be weighing up moving for other potential targets including Wigan full-back Maynor Figueroa. Juan Martín del Potro could return to defend US Open title Posted: 22 Jul 2010 11:14 AM PDT Defending US Open champion Juan Martín del Potro is expected to return from injury at Flushing Meadows, the United States Tennis Association said today. The Argentine 21-year-old, who won his first Grand Slam in New York last year, has been out of action for most of the year after suffering a wrist injury in January and then undergoing surgery in May. The final Grand Slam of the year gets underway on 30 August in New York and Del Potro was today included in the initial entry list for the tournament. A USTA statement said Del Potro “is expected to return to Grand Slam competition after missing the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.” Following his surgery in May, Del Potro had said that he was likely to miss the remaining three Grand Slams of the year, but a quick recovery means he may get the chance to defend his title, after all. The Argentine had previously confirmed he plans to play at the Thailand Open which begins at the end of September. Despite missing out on a large portion of the 2010 season del Potro is still ranked within the world’s top 10—he is currently No7 behind Nikolay Davydenko. Adriano wants Roma success to overshadow the ‘bad times’ Posted: 22 Jul 2010 09:35 AM PDT Brazilian striker Adriano has reiterated his desire to succeed in Serie A after signing a three-year contract with AS Roma. The 28-year-old left his native Brazil to venture back to Italian football following his previous stint at Inter Milan. Adriano’s spell at the San Siro was marred by trouble off the pitch despite boasting impressive goal-scoring figures. The striker described his return to Serie A with Roma as an attempt to “forget the bad times”. “I want to get back to being what I was,” said the Brazilian forward. “I have to work on the field and prove my worth. I feel happy, I made the right choice and I want to win now.” Adriano, who played for Brazilian club Flamengo last season, went on to deflect claims that his fitness was below-par. “I can tell you that in a month I will be close to the right physical shape” The striker also believes Roma are a “great team” who can compete both domestically and in the Champions League. When asked whether he was still suffering from depression by Italian reporters, the Brazilian tackled the sensitive issue. “Rest assured I feel good now,” he said. “I did not have an alcohol dependency problem but depression. “I felt sad and alone, then I went to Brazil, I grew as a man thanks to my family and friends.” Hispania Racing ‘on verge’ of 2011 Toyota partnership Posted: 22 Jul 2010 08:49 AM PDT Hispania Racing are close to sealing a lucrative partnership with Japanese manufacturer Toyota for the 2011 season, according to reports. The Spanish team have struggled during their first season in Formula 1 and many have already cast doubt over their involvement beyond November, but it is understood a deal with Toyota could be finalised at this weekend's German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. As well as the use of Toyota’s chassis and gearbox, the deal may also include engines. Hispania would also benefit from Toyota's R&D team and their state-of-the-art facilities at their factory in Cologne. The services of Toyota-employed engineers and mechanics would be a dream for any new team with a limited infrastructure. Indeed, it is surprising that former world champion Jacques Villeneuve—who has submitted his own bid to race a team from 2011—has opted for failed GP2 team Durango as his partner rather than the vastly more experienced Toyota. Hispania's current chassis is a standard offering from Italian manufacturer Dallara, but the team currently has no engineering or technical department. With the 107% qualifying rule due to return next season, it is clear to everyone that Hispania would need a miracle to even make it to the races on Sunday. This latest news, however, might just be the miracle they have been waiting for. Hispania have the opportunity to move forward with a vastly superior chassis and gearbox to their current option, as well as having the support they currently lack, but desperately need. If the deal does include engine supply—it is not certain whether or not it does—it would be a welcome return for Toyota without the full operational burden, and it could potentially give other teams an option aside from the power plants of Mercedes, Cosworth, Renault and Ferrari. SANZAR dismisses rugby Twenty-20 concept Posted: 22 Jul 2010 07:33 AM PDT Rugby’s joint governing body in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia has rejected plans to create a Twenty-20-style tournament for the sport. SANZAR, creators of both the Tri Nations and Super Rugby tournaments, dismissed the idea which proposed a series of 40-minute matches played between franchises. The concept was penned by former Springbok Rassie Erasmus and would also involve a revised set of rules reducing the amount of kicking during matches. “SANZAR’s representatives met with the promoters of the competition so as to better understand what was envisaged and because we are always open to any ideas that might help promote rugby in our three countries,” SANZAR chief executive Steve Tew said. “However, having considered the concept and the way in which it has been developed; SANZAR has decided it has no interest in any further discussion of the proposed competition.” The plan was scheduled for the rest period in southern hemisphere rugby and would also eat into the preparation time for the Super 15 franchises ahead of their domestic season. The Aviva Premiership is currently running a premiership Sevens series which is deemed by many to be a short enough form of the game. Dan Gosling delighted with ‘brilliant’ Newcastle switch Posted: 22 Jul 2010 07:08 AM PDT Dan Gosling has revealed his delight at finally completing his switch from Everton to Newcastle after signing a four-year deal with the St James’ Park club. “It’s a brilliant move for me, I can’t wait to get started,” Gosling told the club’s official website. “I’ve played at St James’ Park and know about the great atmosphere.” He added: “Playing there in a black and white shirt is something I’ve thought about already and it will be a great day when I finally get to walk out in front of 50,000 fans.” Everton’s reluctance to turn a verbal contract offer into a written agreement has been to Newcastle’s gain, with the highly-rated 20-year old very much fitting the bill for manager Chris Hughton. “We are delighted to have signed Dan,” said Hughton. “He’s the right age and the profile that he has is what makes it such an appealing capture for us. “He’s young, but has Premier League experience and he’s someone who can continue to develop his game. “We see him as a high-energy player and a player that can play from box to box, but he’s also a young player with experience, so he won’t be phased by what is ahead of him.” A Premier League tribunal concluded that Gosling could leave Everton under the Bosman ruling and it is understood Newcastle will not have to pay any compensation as a result. Gosling is however unlikely to be available for the start of the new season due to the injury serious knee injury he suffered in March. Magical Muralitharan finishes with 800 test wickets Posted: 22 Jul 2010 06:46 AM PDT Muttiah Muralitharan signed off a remarkable Test career by becoming the first man to take 800 wickets in his final Test against India in Galle. Murali picked up the last wicket to fall when he had Pragyan Ojha caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene to finish with the eight wickets he needed to reach the milestone. The haul helped set up a resounding ten wicket win for the hosts though this match will be forever remembered as Murali's game. Lasith Malinga's 5-50 in the second innings proved the key to the win but Murali's 800th dismissal broke a doughty last wicket partnership between Ojha and Ishant Sharma which lasted 15 overs. "Galle is my favourite ground and this is the opportunity I was waiting for to win the match and finish it nicely," said Murali, who played in 133 test matches. "My knee is not that great to bowl 50 or 60 overs, I thought." Murali announced his plans to retire from the longer form of the game in July, although he expects to be available for the 50-over World Cup next year. The 38-year-old made his international debut in 1992. He has also taken 515 ODI and 13 T20 international wickets in an 18-year career. Carlo Cudicini delighted after ‘emotional’ return to action Posted: 22 Jul 2010 06:38 AM PDT Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has revealed his emotion at making his return to action. The 36-year-old missed most of last season after a serious motorcycle accident left him with fractured wrists and an injured pelvis. The Italian has returned to action this summer following a rehabilitation programme with Spurs coach Tony Parks and made a 45-minute appearance against Bournemouth 12 days ago. He then featured for a full match against MLS side San Jose the following Saturday. “I feel fine,” Cudicini told the Tottenham Hotspur website. “Of course, after eight months out, there was a bit of emotion at going back to the pitch, but it was a nice feeling to be back and having the chance to get minutes on the pitch. That’s what pre-season’s all about.” He added: “We split the rehabilitation into two parts, the first was in the summer and Parksy did a great job with the physio team and the doctor and now it’s the second part, hard training and going into matches. “At the moment, fingers crossed, everything is going well.” Liverpool could tempt Wayne Bridge away from Eastlands Posted: 22 Jul 2010 04:37 AM PDT Liverpool are ready to make a move for Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge, according to reports in the Daily Mirror. New Reds boss Roy Hodgson has been searching for someone to fill the now vacant left-back position after Emiliano Insua's departure to Fiorentina in a deal worth around £5 million and believes Bridge is the ideal candidate. The former Chelsea defender has suffered a torrid season at City after picking up a troublesome knee injury which ruled him out for much of the campaign. Bridge has also faced having his private life open to the public after the scandal surround ex-partner Vanessa Perroncel and former team-mate John Terry, Bridge, who turns 30 next week, will most likely be tempted by a move to Anfield as City are soon expected to agree a deal with Lazio for highly-rated full-back Alexander Kolarov in a deal believed to be worth around £17 million. Should Kolarov agree a deal with City, it is likely the ex-England defender would find it hard to break into the first-team at Eastlands which would certainly tempt him with a move away from Manchester. Meanwhile Liverpool are believed to be entering negotiations with Italian giants Inter Milan over a deal that would see Javier Mascherano head to the San Siro. Mascherano has been angling for a move away from Anfield for some time now but was blocked in his attempts to leave for Barcelona last summer. Now the Argentina captain is ready to rejoin former Reds boss Rafael Benítez in Milan. Liverpool are hopeful they can receive at least £25 million for the defensive midfielder and may hold out for more should Inter agree a big-money deal that would take hot-prospect striker Mario Balotelli to Manchester City for a reported fee of around £30 million. Jacques Villeneuve confirms Durango F1 link for 2011 Posted: 22 Jul 2010 04:27 AM PDT Jacques Villeneuve has confirmed he is to link up with former Italian GP2 team Durango in his bid to enter his own Formula 1 team next season. Villeneuve released the following short statement on his personal website ahead of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. "There are a number of rumours circulating at the moment and I wanted to clarify a few things before this gets out of hand. "The team will be a joint venture with Durango, and based out of Italy. To be clear, right now all the money comes from corporate sponsorship, and not from personal investors." Disgraced former Renault boss Flavio Briatore, and Al-Saadi al-Gaddafi—son of Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi—had been touted as potential investors. Villeneuve is attempting to become the 13th F1 team after USF1 failed to take the grid for 2010. At the time the former world champion was hoping to make a driving return with Stefan GP, but they did not have enough time to put together a team and a car. No further information has been released on how the partnership will work in terms of designing and developing an F1 car, but Durango do have their own facilities in Italy from their time as a GP2 team. Villeneuve would have used the Toyota TF110 chassis and gearbox had Stefan GP been on the grid this year, and could have been an option for his team in 2011. But the Japanese outfit are believed to be on the verge of a deal with Hispania Racing for use of the designs, while providing technical support for the Spanish team including the use of their extensive state-of-the-art facilities in Cologne. The FIA is expected to make a decision on which team will join motorsport's elite by the end of July or middle of August.
