Dundee United to lodge AEK complaint with UEFA

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 12:03 PM PDT

Dundee United are expected to file a complaint with UEFA following the
disruption surrounding their Europa League tie with AEK Athens.
The venue of the second leg of their European qualifier had been moved
from Athens’ home ground to the stadium of local team Panionios
following the failure of sprinklers last Monday.

However, Panionios supporters were angry at the decision to relocate
bitter rivals AEK to their stadium in Nea Smyrni.

In an audacious attempt to block the match from going ahead, a group of
fans broke into the stadium and caused substantial damage, ripping up
the turf and damaging the goalposts.

The trouble eventually led to a further change in venue, with Dundee
now playing AEK at Olympiakos’ Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in the
Greek capital. AEK officials opted to ban their fans from the match to
avoid further problems.

Diego Milito named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 10:57 AM PDT

Inter Milan striker Diego Milito beat off stiff competition from the
likes of Lionel Messi and Xavi to win the UEFA Club Footballer of the
Year award.
The Argentine forward, who scored both of Inter’s goals in his side’s
2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in May’s Champions League final, won the
prize with a total of nine nominations.

The winner was voted for by the 16 managers of the clubs that reached
the knock-out stage of last season’s competition, including the Premier
League’s Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Arsène Wenger.

Gunners boss Wenger was clearly left impressed by four-goal Messi
following his side’s 4-1 demolition at the Camp Nou last season as he
voted the Argentine as his top pick for Forward of the Year.

Ferguson, meanwhile, made Milito his number one ahead of Messi and
Cristiano Ronaldo.

The ceremony in Monaco also saw the presentation of the other awards
according to the four categories, with each one of this year’s winners
hailing from the title holders Inter.

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar beat Barcelona’s Victor Valdes and Lyon’s Hugo
Lloris to win the goalkeeper award while Wesley Sneijder was favoured
ahead of Arjen Robben and Xavi in the midfielder category. Brazilian
Maicon just edged out Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué to seal the defender’s
prize.

UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year: Julio Cesar
Nominees: Julio Cesar, Hugo Lloris, Victor Valdes

UEFA Club Defender of the Year: Maicon

UEFA Club Midfielder of the Year: Wesley Sneijder

Juventus playmaker Diego set to sign for Wolfsburg

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 07:05 AM PDT

Juventus playmaker Diego is set to join VFL Wolfsburg after
successfully completing a medical with the Bundesliga side, according
to reports in Germany.
The Brazilian international joined the Turin club from Werder Bremen
last summer for €24.5m, but he failed to settle in Serie A and has been
recently linked with a return to Germany.

Juve’s recent acquisition of Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani on a
year-long loan appears to have spelled the end of Diego’s time in
Italy, with newly-appointed Wolfsburg manager Steve McClaren understood
to be a long-term fan of the 25-year-old.

It is believed Juventus will receive a fee of €15 million for the
player, who is set to sign a four-year contract at the Volkswagen Arena.

Diego became one of the most sought-after players in Europe following
an impressive three seasons with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga
between 2006 and 2009.

He was seen at Wolfsburg’s training ground on Wednesday night as he
arrived to complete his medical. German newspaper Bild reports that he
will have his first training session with the club on Friday.

Rafael Benítez remains coy over Javier Mascherano bid

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 06:15 AM PDT

Inter Milan manager Rafael Benítez remained tight-lipped over the
potential signing of want-away Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano.
Benítez was speaking to the media ahead of Friday night’s UEFA Super
Cup clash between Inter and Atlético Madrid in Monaco, but the Spaniard
refused be drawn on the fresh speculation over his former player’s
future.

“Two different things,” said Benítez, who joined Inter after leaving
Liverpool this summer. “The first one is that we’re here just to play
the (UEFA Super Cup) final, and the second one is that I am the coach.

“We have a director, we have a chairman and I think that they have a
very good relationship with Roy Hodgson, so it is a problem for them.

“I am the coach and the coach cannot sign any player.”

Mascherano, 26, has long been linked with a move away from Anfield and
Spanish giants Barcelona tabled a £12m offer for the Argentina captain
earlier this week.

But Inter have now emerged as the front-runners in the race to secure
the midfielder’s signature before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

British clubs set to learn Champions League fate

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 04:03 AM PDT

Top seeds Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea will be hoping to
avoid La Liga giants Real Madrid when the Champions League group stage
draw is made in Monaco this evening.
José Mourinho’s side are in pot two for tonight’s draw and could face
any of the five British clubs to have qualified for the group stages.

Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham, who sealed their place in the draw with a
6-3 aggregate victory over Swiss side Young Boys last night, could be
pitted against reigning champions Inter Milan or Spanish champions
Barcelona.

Teams cannot be drawn against others from the same pot or the same
country, therefore Spurs cannot face any of their Premier League rivals
until the quarter-final stage.

UEFA’s seedings are based on a ranking system which takes into account
performances in European competition over the last five seasons.

The draw for the Champions League group stages gets underway at 1700BST.

Pots for Champions League draw:

Pot one: Inter Milan, Barcelona, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern
Munich, AC Milan, Lyon.

Pot two: Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica,
Valencia, Marseille, Panathinaikos.

Pot three: Tottenham, Rangers, Ajax, Schalke, Basle, Braga, FC
Copenhagen, Spartak Moscow.

Pot four: Hapoel Tel Aviv, FC Twente, Rubin Kazan, Auxerre, CFR Cluj,
Partizan Belgrade, MSK Zilina, Bursaspor.
