Damien Comolli ‘delighted’ with Liverpool position

Damien Comolli is eager start to help “rebuild” Liverpool after being
appointed as director of football strategy at Anfield.
Comolli, who has previously enjoyed spells at Tottenham and Arsenal as
a director of football and scout, is set to start work with Reds owner
John Henry and manager Roy Hodgson immediately.

“I am delighted to be joining Liverpool and look forward to working
with John and Roy,” said Comolli.

“I think we all realise there is a big job ahead, but we all share the
vision that John has for rebuilding the club and bringing back the
success that the supporters deserve.”

Despite many relationships between Premier League managers and
directors of football suffering some well-publicised difficulties, Reds
boss Hodgson has welcomed Comolli with open arms.

“I feel very good about it," Hodgson said during a press conference at
Anfield. “It is something we have talked about with the owners and
something they were very keen to put in place.

“The owners come from an American sporting background where the team
manager is very much responsible for team affairs, but alongside him
there is a person who can have all sorts of titles, a type of sporting
director in European terms.

“If you’re going to run a football club these days there are a lot of
elements that need to be dealt with. Recruitment of players and
scouting is a major aspect, as of course is the Academy and all the
work you need to do to bring players through.

“All of this has a life of its own to some extent outside the life of a
first-team squad.

Hodgson added: “In Europe I am very used to having a situation where
you have to work alongside people like that and I think it is becoming
more and more common in England as well.”

New Reds owner John W Henry has stated that his tenure at Anfield will
be focused on value in the transfer market and developing young
prospects. Indeed the American businessman is believed to be a big
admirer of Arsène Wenger and the way in which he has built a squad
around young starlets at Arsenal.

Speaking about the appointment of Comolli, Henry said: “Damien has a
proven track-record of identifying exciting young footballing talent
and we are delighted that he has agreed to join Liverpool.

“Working closely with Roy Hodgson and the coaching staff, I know he
will make a valuable contribution to strengthening the Club and the
squad as we move forward.”

Nani sets his sights on becoming the world’s best

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 04:56 PM PDT

Portuguese winger Nani is convinced he can become one of the best
players in the world.
The Manchester United winger’s impressive form this season has seen him
become a crucial part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.

“I want to be one of the best players,” Nani said. “In the future, I
want everyone to be saying Nani is one of the best players in the
world. That is my ambition.”

The 23-year-old’s place in the right side of United’s midfield has been
strengthened by the absence of Antonio Valencia, who suffered a
long-term ankle injury at the beginning of the season.

Nani, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon for €25.5million
in 2007, has benefited from the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and
Carlos Tevez and has become one of the Premier League’s most
eye-catching performers this season.

“Since I came to Manchester I always said I believed in my qualities
and my capabilities,” said Nani. “Eventually I got my opportunities.

“I always knew I could play well and be an important member of the
team. I enjoy the pressure of being an important member of the side.

He added: “When you have the ambition to be a top player you have to
like the pressure as well.”

Filippo Inzaghi tops the European goalscoring charts

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 04:38 PM PDT

AC Milan’s Filippo Inzaghi said it was a “dream” to surpass Raul and
Gerd Müller’s European goalscoring record after scoring a brace against
Real Madrid at the San Siro on Wednesday night.
The 37-year-old was introduced as a second-half substitute with Milan
trailing 1-0 José Mourinho’s men. The former Juventus striker’s
ten-minute brace put the hosts in front only for Pedro Leon’s
injury-time equaliser to earn the La Liga side a point.

His two goals saw him overtake Raul and Müller’s tally of 69 goals in
all European competitions and overhaul Andriy Shevchenko as the
Rossoneri’s leading scorer in Europe with 40.

“I’m very happy, it’s a great evening for me,” said Inzaghi. “Setting
this record at the San Siro in front of my supporters has always been
one of my dreams.

“Now a phase of my 20-year career comes to an end, although the
equaliser at the end of the match spoiled the night a little bit.

“I give credit to the supporters for [the records], their cheering gave
me an incredible lift when I stood up from the bench.

“When I’m at the San Siro, all the joyful moments I’ve spent wearing
the Milan shirt come to my mind. I knew I was ready to play, I feel in
great shape, but in the end the result left me a bit disappointed, even
though I scored twice from two shots.

He added: “With this brace I overtook Shevchenko as the most prolific
Milan player in European club competitions. I also overtook Gerd Muller
and Van Basten. I want to thank everyone who has been close to me, my
family, my brother, my girlfriend.”
