Manchester United battle past Arsenal to take top spot

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 04:06 PM PST
BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE, 13 DECEMBER 2010 Manchester United 1 Arsenal 0
Manchester United extended their unbeaten start in the Premier League
and returned to the top of the table after a battling win over Arsenal
at Old Trafford.
An instinctive improvised header from Ji-Sung Park was enough for Sir
Alex Ferguson's men, who have now gone 16 league games without losing –
setting a new club record and firing them two points clear with a game
in hand.

United's defensive stability and hard-working midfield were the keys to
an effective and battling performance which saw them secure a vital win
in the championship race.

Arsenal, who came into Monday night’s match top of the table, had only
beaten United in two of their last 10 games at Old Trafford and not won
in Manchester since September 2006.

Both teams knew they could ill afford to lose – and it showed during a
first half void of clear cut chances.

The best chance of the game fell to Nani in the 23rd minute after
centre-back Sebastien Squillaci failed to clear his lines and his poor
header fell to the Portuguese winger, whose first-time volley on the
stretch whistled past Premier League debutant Wojciech Szczesny's
right-hand post.

The home side took the lead four minutes before the break when Park
scored his fourth goal against Arsène Wenger's side. The South Korean
showed great skill to arch his body to meet Nani's deflected shot and
loop his header over the 20-year-old goalkeeper to give United the edge
before half time.

United started the second half brightly and nearly doubled their lead
when Wayne Rooney sent Anderson through, but Szczesny's stood tall and
saved the Brazilian's chipped effort.

Soon after Anderson robbed Jack Wilshere on the edge of the United box
to start a counter-attack that finished with Nani blasting over from
inside the box.

Edwin Van Der Sar then spilled a Samir Nasri effort but Nemanja Vidic
did enough to stop Marouane Chamakh from converting the rebound.

With his side lacking their normal fluency and swift passing Wenger
introduced captain Cesc Fàbregas and Robin van Persie, but the double
substitution failed to open up the game.

United had the chance to end the contest when they were award a
controversial penalty in the 74th minute after Gael Clichy was adjudged
to have handled the ball by linesman Dave Bryan.

Rooney stepped up to take the spot-kick but saw his effort fly over the
bar and into the Stretford End.

The striker nearly made an amends five minutes later when he latched
onto a long ball forward by Rio Ferdinand, but at full stretch Szczesny
managed to parry away his lobed effort.

Questions will remain about Arsenal's temperament and ability to handle
pressure after this match, while United ominously sit undefeated at the
top of the table despite not yet hitting top gear this season.

Sir Alex praised his side’s defensive strength after the match. “Our
back four were magnificent tonight,” he said. “With that foundation, it
always gives us a chance.

“We have to play well to beat a team like Arsenal and I think we
performed well tonight.”

He added: “We've got a difficult game against Chelsea on Sunday, it's a
very important game to come. I think our form is improving, and with
the back four playing like that it gives us consistency which always
gives us a chance.”

Blatter: Gays should ‘refrain from sexual activities’ in Qatar

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:33 PM PST

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has joked that gay people “should refrain
from sexual activities” at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Blatter, who was speaking at a press conference in South Africa held to
discuss the legacy of this year’s tournament, also admitted that the
tournament will have to adjust to its host nation in 12 years’ time.

When asked what advice he would give to gay football fans who want to
travel to Qatar for the competition, given that homosexuality is
illegal in the Gulf state, he grinned: “I would say they should refrain
from any sexual activities.

“It’s another culture and another religion, but in football we have no
boundaries,” Blatter added. “We open everything to everybody and I
think there shall not be any discrimination against any human beings,
being on this side or that side, left or right or whatever.

“Football is a game that does not affect any discrimination. If people
want to watch a match in Qatar in 2022, they will be admitted to
matches.”

The Fifa chief went on to defend the world governing body’s decision to
award the World Cup to two countries that have never hosted it before.

“We go to Eastern Europe, to Russia where the World Cup has never been.
And later on, we go to the Middle East, we go to the Arabic world, we
go to the Islamic world,” said Blatter.

“This is the development of football and don’t speak about money. This
has nothing to do with money, as it had nothing to do with money here
in Africa. It has to do with the development of the game.”

F1 News: Team Lotus to switch back to green and gold for 2011

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:59 PM PST

The Sport Review’s round-up of all of the latest news from the world of
Formula 1.
Team Lotus have scrapped plans to race in Lotus' iconic John Player
Special black and gold colours after the newly Lotus-backed Renault
team revealed they would sport the same livery.

Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes said: "Whether they copied us or we
copied them that's beside the point now. The point is what makes sense.
Having two Lotus brands on the grid is no issue. Four black cars
looking the same is silly and one has to relent."

Team Lotus will now race in a variation of the green and gold used in
the 2010 season – the colours also used by the original Team Lotus in
the 1960s.

The FIA has announced that F1 teams will no longer be punished for
deploying team orders, but could still be penalised for bringing the
sport into disrepute.

Ferrari were found guilty of using team orders in the German Grand Prix
in June when they asked Felipe Massa to move over to gift Fernando
Alonso the lead.

Former F1 team boss Tom Walkinshaw has died at the age of 64 after a
lengthy battle with cancer. Walkinshaw was a passionate racer with a
20-year career spanning Formula Ford, Formula Three Formula 5000,
Formula Two, and BTCC, before moving into team management.

Hispania Racing have denied reports that owner José Ramón Carabante has
put the team up for sale as he struggles to fund its 2011 campaign.

"The team is not on sale, we are working for 2011," a spokesman
said. "Carabante is working on getting sponsors and investors. One
Spanish group is interested in joining the team but things are not so
easy nowadays in the world."

Volkswagen have revealed that the new engine rules due to enter F1 in
2013 will make the sport more attractive to them. The German
manufacturer, which boasts Porsche and Audi, among other well-known
road car producers as subsidiaries, has hinted at the possibility of
entering the sport if the conditions were right.

"We welcome the decision," said VW's Hans-Joachim Stuck. "It is not
only great news for F1, but for the whole of motorsport, as it takes
the sport in the right direction environmentally.

"Of course, we have not decided anything, but the conditions for
Volkswagen to possibly enter the category have now been created. The
engine rules are a good starting point."

And finally…

Sir Richard Branson will serve as a flight attendant on a special
AirAsia charity flight from London to Kuala Lumpur in February next
year after losing a bet with Tony Fernandes.

The entrepreneurs agreed they would serve on the other's airline if
their team finished behind in the world championship – an honour that
fell to Branson after his Virgin Racing outfit finished behind Lotus
Racing.

An auction will be set up for tickets for the 12-hour "party flight"
with the money raised going to charity.

Sam Allardyce ‘shocked’ by Blackburn Rovers axe

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:21 PM PST

Manager Sam Allardyce says he is “shocked and disappointed” after being
sacked by Blackburn Rovers.
Allardyce and his assistant Neil McDonald were shown the door by the
club’s new owners, the Venky’s Group from India, on Monday afternoon.

The 56-year-old manager leaves Rovers 13th in the Premier League and
five points above the relegation zone.

“I am very shocked and disappointed to be leaving Blackburn,” said
Allardyce. “I am extremely proud to have managed this club and I
enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the players, my staff and the
supporters during my time in charge.

“I now wish them and the football club every success for the future.”

Rovers have announced that first-team coach Steve Kean will take
temporary charge of the club as they begin their search for a new
manager.

Martin O’Neill and Martin Jol are the early favourites to succeed
Allardyce at Ewood Park.

Chelsea spirit will bring us title, declares Frank Lampard

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:09 PM PST

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is convinced that the Blues will
retain their Premier League title if they continue to play as they did
at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
The 32-year-old Chelsea midfielder made the bold claim in the wake of
his side’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham, where he made his first
appearance for the Londoners since being sidelined in August.

“If we play with the spirit we played, I have no doubt we’ll win the
league, because we’ve got the quality in our team,” said Lampard.

Lampard also blamed injuries for the club’s recent slump in form after
having squandered their five-point lead at the top of the table to now
sit three points behind pace-setters Manchester United.

Captain John Terry and midfielder Michael Essien recently returned to
first team action and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti gave Lampard a
run-out for the final 12 minutes at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

“Injuries have been tough on us, certain moments have been tough on
us,” said the England international. “But with the spirit and ability
we’ve got in our team, if we play like that, I’ve got all confidence
that we can do it.”
