Harry Redknapp: Spurs will end Man Utd’s unbeaten run

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 02:30 PM PST

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is confident his side will become the
first team to beat Manchester United in the league this season on
Sunday.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have not lost any of their 20 top flight
matches this term but the Spurs manager insists his side can end their
run at White Hart Lane this weekend.

“We’re not an outsider playing against red-hot favourites,” said
Redknapp. “It’s a very evenly balanced game between two good teams and
I don’t think there’s an awful lot between us.

“We don’t fear anybody. You’ve got to believe you can win the game and
there’s no reason we shouldn’t believe that. When we play well we’re as
exciting as anybody.”

Fourth-placed Spurs are eight points behind Sir Alex’s table-toppers
and Redknapp believes his side need to win on Sunday to retain any
hopes of winning the league – and he expects this year’s title race to
go down to the wire.

“It’s a game we need to win to keep us in there,” he said. “It’s so
close that getting in the top four is going to be hard. There are five
teams scrapping it out and we’re one of those teams again.

“I wouldn’t write Manchester City off, I wouldn’t write Arsenal off and
even Chelsea are capable of going on a run. Those teams can go and win
eight out of the next 10 and draw a couple. It’s very open, I don’t
think any one team is on another level to the others.”

Redknapp also all but ended speculation over a possible loan move for
David Beckham by revealing there is no deal on the cards. The LA Galaxy
midfielder has been training with Spurs this week during the MLS
off-season and despite showing interest, the Tottenham boss says the
former England captain will not be joining the North London side.

“I would have liked him to play,” said Redknapp. “If he could have come
until the end of the season that would have been great.”

And Redknapp revealed he won’t be quizzing Beckham over his former club
ahead of Sunday’s showdown. He said: “Manchester United is part of his
life and I don’t think he’d want to do that. What can I ask him? A lot
of the players weren’t there when he was there and I wouldn’t put him
in that position, it wouldn’t be fair.”

He added: “If he wants to come in to our dressing room or go into
theirs (on Sunday) that won’t be a problem, but I don’t know whether he
fancies coming or not.”

Andy Murray faces Karol Beck in Australian Open first round

British No1 Andy Murray will play Slovakia’s Karol Beck in the first
round of the Australian Open after the draw was made on Thursday.
The 23-year-old fifth seed, who is in the same half of the draw as
world No1 Rafael Nadal, will meet Beck for the first time when the
first grand slam of the year gets under way in Melbourne next week.

Beck, 28, returned to the sport in 2007 after serving a two-year drugs
ban after he tested positive for clenbuterol in the 2005 Davis Cup.

Murray is seeded to meet Robin Soderling, the man who this week
replaced him as world No4, in the quarter-finals and the 26-year-old
Swede will present a formidable challenge for last year’s beaten
finalist in Melbourne.

Should Murray reach the semi-finals he would likely face Nadal. The
Scot could not meet defending champion Roger Federer until the final as
he is on the other side of the draw.

Meanwhile, Federer will play Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko and could meet 12th
seed Gael Monfils in the fourth round.

Nadal faces Brazilian world No96 Marcos Daniel in the first round, with
last year’s semi-finalist Marin Cilic possibly waiting in the last 16.

Asian football chief rules out winter World Cup in Qatar

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 11:08 AM PST

Asian football chief Mohamed Bin Hammam has ruled out moving the 2022
World Cup in Qatar to winter or staging tournament matches around the
Gulf region.
Bin Hammam says he was “unimpressed” by suggestions from Fifa president
Sepp Blatter that the tournament could be moved to winter to avoid
searing summer temperatures in Qatar.

He also criticised Michel Platini after the Uefa president said the
tournament could take place as a “Gulf World Cup”, with matches played
in several countries surrounding Qatar.

“I believe Qatar can stand alone and organise the competition by
itself,” said the Asian Football Confederation president.

“And I’m really not very impressed by these opinions to distribute the
game over the Gulf or change the time from July to January – it’s
actually premature, you know, it’s people’s opinions and they’re just
discussing it on no basis or no ground.”

Bin Hammam added: “It’s not up to one, two or three members of Fifa to
talk about changing the time without getting the real stakeholders’
opinions.”

Plans to reschedule the tournament have also come under fire from
England’s Fifa executive committee member Geoff Thompson who described
suggestions of moving the 2022 tournament as “disappointing” and said
it should only be considered if there is clear medical evidence which
proved players and fans would be at risk.

“This should be a proper discussion and it is disappointing to me that
people are talking about moving the tournament when Qatar bid to stage
it at a certain time,” said Thompson.

“It was never discussed at any (executive committee) meeting. At the
end of the day, people are bidding for the World Cup at the appropriate
time. The bidding document is clear about when it should be.”

Thompson added: “We may believe that there is a risk but until we are
presented with a medical report which shows clearly that people’s
health is at risk, until we get something concrete, then we shouldn’t
move it.”

Roque Santa Cruz seals Blackburn Rovers return

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 07:25 AM PST

Blackburn Rovers have resigned former striker Roque Santa Cruz from
Manchester City on loan until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old Paraguay international, who is available to face
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, completed a medical at the
club’s training ground on Friday morning. “I feel like I am coming home
– this has been the easiest decision of my career,” said Santa Cruz.

City signed the forward, who scored 29 goals over two seasons for
Rovers, for £17.5m in 2009 but he failed to make an impact at Eastlands
after struggling with injuries.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean says he is delighted to have sealed Santa
Cruz’s return to bolster Rovers’ attacking options.

“When he was here first time he had a fantastic time and showed his
quality,” said Kean. “I think he feels he has got a little bit of
business to finish. Hopefully he will go and do that until the end of
the season.

“He has got an infectious personality and was very popular here first
time around. I’m sure he will be this time. He’s coming back to a place
that was special to him and I am sure he is going to deliver as good if
not better.”

Blackburn are expected to pay the majority of Santa Cruz’s wages during
the loan spell and although there is no deal set in place for the
Lancashire club to sign him at the end of the season, Kean is
optimistic that the temporary transfer can be made permanent.

“We are trying to speak to Manchester City to see if there can be an
option at the end of it,” revealed the Blackburn boss. “We’ll ask for
that and if we can get it, all the better.”
