The New York Red Bulls striker, 33, has been training with his old club during the Major League Soccer close season and insists Arsenal’s next generation are closer than ever to ending their six-year wait for a trophy. “The guys in the Arsenal dressing room are confident. It all depends on them — Arsenal play the best football,” Henry said. “I became Arsenal fan and like all the Arsenal fans I want them to bring back silverware — that would be the cherry on the cake, especially for the boss and the fans.” The forward, who scored 226 goals and won five major trophies with the north Londoners, added: “This generation are talented, there is just that little piece of silverware missing.” Arsène Wenger’s men are still fighting on all four fronts this season and Henry believes the gunners are well placed to upset Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League. “That is going to be the two best teams in terms of football,” he said. “Both clubs play the way football should be played. I think for the neutral it will be an amazing game. “For me? I’m an Arsenal fan but have a lot of friends at Barca — so it will be a difficult one. But if any team can beat Barca, it would be Arsenal.” And Henry hopes skipper Cesc Fàbregas will stay in north London instead of seeking a return to his boyhood club Barcelona. He added: “Cesc is from Spain, but as an Arsenal fan I want him to stay at Arsenal. Right now you can see his commitment playing for the club.” Scottish Premier League clubs ‘agree league revamp Posted: 17 Jan 2011 03:26 PM PST Scotland’s top flight clubs have reached an agreement for a 10-team top league and a second tier of 12 teams following a meeting at Hampden Park on Monday. The clubs have asked the Scottish Premier Leagues’s Strategic Review Group to flesh out the plans, which also include play-offs, an earlier start to the season and a winter shutdown as a means to prevent the majority of SPL games being called off in December and January as a result of wintry weather. The majority of fans would prefer a larger league but clubs have already rejected a league of 16 or 18 teams. Some clubs are however still understood to want a 14-team league, which would see teams play each other twice, a proposal championed by the Daily Record. The problem for Scotland’s top tier clubs remains financial, and with SPL attendances continuing to fall the only way to safeguard their futures is to negotiate the best deal possible by selling television rights to broadcasters Sky, ESPN, and the BBC. But with a 14-team league clubs believe they would miss out through lost matches and television money. An SPL statement read: “The Scottish Premier League clubs today reaffirmed their commitment to the work of the Strategic Review Group to develop a structure for the whole of Scottish football. “Broad support was given to progressing a 10-team Premiership and a 12-team Championship at the top of a pyramid for Scottish football as the preferred option. “The SPL clubs have asked the executive team to further develop aspects of these proposals and to update the Strategic Review Group’s report. “The SPL will now consult with the Scottish FA and the Scottish Football League and its clubs before a final decision by the SPL clubs.” Despite claims from the league that clubs are now working together to finalise plans, two or three clubs could still derail the SPL’s proposals With no vote on the agenda at this meeting, a formal resolution is expected to be put to the clubs in time for a vote in March. Ryan Babel fined £10,000 by FA over Twitter posts Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:12 AM PST Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has been handed a £10,000 fine by the Football Association and warned about his future conduct for posting comments and a mocked-up image of referee Howard Webb on Twitter. The FA stressed that use of social networking websites “must be regarded as being in the public domain” and that it is the players’ “responsibility to ensure only appropriate comments are used”. Babel faced a personal hearing at the FA on Monday in relation to the updates he posted on Twitter after Liverpool’s FA Cup exit at Old Trafford, where the Reds conceded a controversial first-minute penalty and had captain Steven Gerrard sent off. The Dutch winger posted a doctored image of Webb wearing a United shirt after the final whistle. He also wrote: “And they call him one of the best referees? That’s a joke. SMH (shaking my head).” Despite the Holland international quickly posting an apology, he became first player to be charged by the FA for an indiscretion on the social networking website. Regulatory commission chairman Roger Burden said: “Social network sites must be regarded as being in the public domain. “All participants need to be aware, in the same way as if making a public statement in other forms of media, that any comments would be transmitted to a wider audience. It is their responsibility to ensure only appropriate comments are used.” Australian Open 2011: Roger Federer eases through Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:43 AM PST Roger Federer began the defence of his Australian Open title in style by thrashing unseeded Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-1 6-1 6-3. Federer was in control from the start, continuing his stunning form from Doha last week where he won the title without dropping a set. The world No2 seemed relaxed on court, never giving his opponent a foothold in the match. Remarkably, if Federer does not retain his title in Melbourne it will be the first time since 2003 that he has not held at least one grand slam trophy. Federer said after the match: “I’m really enjoying myself, playing extremely well at the moment and the last six months have been fantastic. I’m very happy how things are going and I will see how far I can go in the tournament. “I thought it was a good match. I don’t think he played too bad himself. I saw some talent in him and that’s why I was really happy I chose the tactic early on to pressure him. That it worked was great and I’m obviously very happy.” The Swiss maestro now faces a tricky encounter in round two against former world No7 Giles Simon who defeated Taipei’s Lu Yen-Hsu 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-4 6-2. Intriguingly, the 26-year-old Frenchman, now ranked 34, has beaten Federer during their only two previous meetings. Third seed Novak Djokovic also sent out warning signs to his rivals, sweeping aside Marcel Granollers 6-1-6-3 6-1. The world No3, who helped Serbia pick up the Davis Cup back in December, was in supreme form, dictating the rallies and utilising his powerful groundstrokes. The first day brought the crowds many epic encounters and surprise seed exits. Having beaten Rafael Nadal last week, Nickolay Davydenko fell to Florian Mayer 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4. Meanwhile, American Sam Querrey was looking to build on his impressive 2010 but was another seeded casualty, the 18th seed losing 5-7 6-2 3-6 6-1 8-6 to Poland’s Lukas Kubot. His fellow countryman Mardy Fish escaped a first round exit, having to battle from two sets down to see off Victor Hanescu 2-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-3. The charismatic Frenchman Gael Monfils prevailed in a gruelling five-set marathon against Thiemo De Bakker 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 7-5 6-2 6-1 in three hours 38 minutes. This season holds big things for highly-rated 19-year-old Grigior Dimitriov, who plays with a similar style to Federer. He had to come through qualifying, but won his first grand slam match with relative ease in a 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over Andrey Golubev. Elsewhere, top seeds Tomas Berdych, Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco cruised through to the next round. Andy Murray and Nadal both begin their quests for the title on Tuesday, with Murray set to take on Karol Beck at around 5am UK time. Striker Darren Bent on verge of £18m Aston Villa switch Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:06 AM PST Sunderland striker Darren Bent is on the verge sealing of an £18m switch to Aston Villa. The England international handed in a written transfer request on Sunday night and Black Cats manager Steve Bruce confirmed the reports on Monday. Bruce told ESPN: “I’m disappointed but that’s the way it is.” A Sunderland statement read: “The club can confirm that it received a written transfer from Darren Bent following yesterday’s Wear-Tyne derby match.” Aston Villa are keen to bolster their strike options with the injury prone Emile Heskey managing just three league goals this term, while the out-of-form John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor have failed to net a single strike in 25 games. The deal, which could rise to £24m depending on appearances and performances, would mark a major coup for Villa boss Gérard Houllier, who has been plagued with rumours surrounding his future in recent weeks. Bent joined Sunderland from Tottenham for £10m in 2009 and has netted 36 times in 63 appearances for Bruce’s side. The former Ipswich Town trainee has made seven appearances for the England national team and scored his first goal against Switzerland in August.
