The 24-year-old from Bathgate will partner Adrian Sutil for the Indian team after being promoted from his test role to replace Vitantonio Liuzzi. Di Resta's drive was confirmed in Glasgow on Wednesday at an event at the headquarters of Force India sponsors Whyte and Mackay, but it had long been known he would secure a seat for 2011. The current DTM champion, di Resta also beat current F1 champion Sebastian Vettel to the Formula 3 title in 2006 and will relish the opportunity to race against the German again in 2011. "Naturally I am thrilled to be making my race debut this season," di Resta said. "Becoming an F1 driver has been a long-held ambition of mine, something I’ve wanted to do since I first stepped into a kart, and to finally realise it feels amazing. "I’ve worked really hard for this opportunity throughout my career and to get it with Force India, a young team that has ambitions as big as mine, is genuinely exciting." Di Resta becomes the first Scot in F1 since David Coulthard, who is now a commentator and pundit for the BBC's coverage of the sport, and is also the cousin of three times IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti. His role as test driver for Force India last season gives him a good starting point for his first full season in F1, and he will feature heavily in the forthcoming winter tests. "Last year was a huge learning curve, but it got me into the team, the environment, and enabled me to learn all the systems you need to go through," said di Resta. "I know the team now and I know what it takes to get through a weekend. I’ve learned many of the tracks, but it’s still going to be a different challenge." Former Williams driver Nico Hülkenberg will test for Force India in Valencia, before handing the car to di Resta. Li Na upbeat over Chinese tennis after reaching final Posted: 27 Jan 2011 09:19 AM PST Ninth seed Li Na came from a set down to stun world No1 Caroline Wozniacki and reach her first grand slam final at the Australian Open. Li saved a match point before fighting back to seal a 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over her Danish opponent and set up a clash with third seed Kim Clijsters in Saturday’s final. The 28-year-old world No7 is the first Chinese player to reach a Major final and she hopes that her impressive run can inspire a new generation of talent in her home country. She said: “I think possibly because I have got to the final, maybe young children will see that and think ‘maybe one day I can do the same or even better than her’. “Perhaps also the authorities will start to look more at tennis. I know Chinese tennis is just starting but I hope that maybe after three or five years China, a bit like Russia, will have many players coming through.” Clijsters booked her place in Sunday’s final after breezing past Russia’s Vera Zvonareva 6-3 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes. Ryan Babel – The departure of Liverpool’s Dutch enigma Posted: 27 Jan 2011 08:32 AM PST Ryan Babel called time on his Liverpool career on Tuesday and completed his move to Hoffenheim on a two-and-a-half year deal. It ends a difficult four years at Anfield, where despite enjoying a number of high points, Babel leaves with a legacy very much unfulfilled. Billed as one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects, the Dutch winger moved to Merseyside for £11.5m in 2007. As he arrived from Ajax, Babel drew a favourable comparison to Thierry Henry from AC Milan legend Marco van Basten, who claimed he had “all the potential” to emulate the Arsenal striker. The former Ajax forward added: “The pace, movement, finishing, feel for the game, it’s all there, if he keeps developing and improving there is no saying what he might achieve in the game.” His match-winning exploits at the European Under-21 championship in the summer of 2007 announced his talent to English audiences and at the time of his official unveiling at Liverpool the Ajax youth product had already earned 14 caps with his country’s senior team. >From the first moment Babel donned Liverpool’s colours the qualities described by van Basten were evident. Babel made his Premier League debut at Aston Villa when introduced as a second-half substitute by Rafael Benítez, and he immediately showcased his talents. Days later he was again a threat from the bench in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea. But Babel’s early days on Merseyside were to give an accurate forecast of the pattern of his eventual career at the club. He was used sparingly by Benítez in his first season in England and struggled to match the explosive impact that Fernando Torres—who also arrived in the summer of 2007—had made. For a time Babel rivalled Anfield cult hero David Fairclough’s status as Liverpool’s European Super Sub. His late strike against Marseille in the group stages ensured Liverpool’s progress into the next round, and that was followed by an important goal against Arsenal in the second-leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Anfield. The following season saw Babel face stiff competition from Dirk Kuyt, Albert Reira and Yossi Benayoun for a place in Benítez’s first-choice eleven. The 24-year-old struggled to retain a regular starting spot and the rest of the time spent under the Spaniard’s management saw Babel used predominantly as a substitute, with the winger enjoying sporadic success in front of goal. Liverpool rejected a £8m bid from Birmingham for the attacker last January as Benítez reiterated his desire to keep hold of the former Ajax star. But what may at the time have been construed as a statement of faith instead heralded a false dawn. Babel will argue that Benítez failed to hand him regular opportunities, denying him the chance to develop and showcase his ability. But when the Dutch international was given rare chances to shine, he was too often guilty of being wasteful in possession and lacked the incisive cross or final ball. After Babel scored a long-range strike in a 1-1 draw against Lyon in 2009, BBC pundit Alan Hansen called on the forward to be more consistent. “He’s got the pace, the strength and the feet to be a top, top player, but he needs to make use of those attributes on a more consistent basis,” he said. But even Benítez’s successor Roy Hodgson only used Babel sparingly despite the club’s plight in front of goal as Torres struggled for form. Babel produced a clinical finish to help Liverpool to a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in his first Premier League start this season, but in the matches that followed Hodgson still preferred David N’Gog to partner Torres. Now, as he bids to resurrect his career in Germany, Liverpool fans will look back on the Anfield career of a player brimming with potential but whose time on Merseyside was hampered by both a lack of opportunity, and a failure to savour the rare chances when they came. Others may be more straightforward. Perhaps Liverpool and Ryan Babel were simply not a good fit. José Mourinho ‘would coach’ Man Utd, Man City or Chelsea Posted: 27 Jan 2011 07:19 AM PST José Mourinho has again underlined his desire to return to the Premier League after revealing he would be happy to coach Manchester rivals City or United, or his old club Chelsea. The Real Madrid manager is struggling to maintain a positive relationship with the Bernabéu hierarchy with reports claiming he could quit the La Liga club as early as the end of the season. Suggestions of a rift with the club's director general Jorge Valdano emerged last week and the 48-year-old coach, who took over at Real Madrid last summer, has now further fuelled speculation over his future in Spain by issuing a come-and-get-me plea to the three top flight clubs. “I've decided to return to England,” Mourinho said. “I have nothing prepared about my future, I just want to be happy in my work. I have no preferences about Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea. “I’m not saying that the Premier League is the most spectacular in the world but it certainly is the best organisation, fair play and the enormous respect that exists between adversaries.” Mourinho enjoyed a fruitful three years in England after guiding Chelsea to successive league titles and two League Cup successes before beating Manchester United in the 2007 FA Cup final. The Portuguese coach left Chelsea by mutual consent in September 2007 following a series of disagreements with Blues owner Roman Abramovich. He then guided Inter Milan to five trophies in two seasons before taking the reigns at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is certain the Copa del Rey final will be contested between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid took secured a 1-0 advantage in their semi-final first leg against Sevilla on Wednesday while Barcelona thumped Almeria by five goals at Camp Nou. “In the Copa del Rey final will be the best two teams in the country,” said Ronaldo. “Although I must say this is not going to be about revenge. As for the game against Sevilla, we could have scored more than just one goal, but it’s still a good result.” Novak Djokovic dethrones Roger Federer to reach final Posted: 27 Jan 2011 05:47 AM PST Third seed Novak Djokovic clinically dismissed defending champion Roger Federer 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 to book his place in Sunday’s Australian Open final against either Andy Murray or David Ferrer. The Serb produced a dominating performance against the world No2 with Federer unable to make inroads on the Djokovic serve—the world No3 hit 69 per cent of first serves in. Despite Federer managing to create 10 break point opportunities over the course of the three hours it took to complete the match, the Swiss could only convert three. Federer, 29, has won the Australian title on four previous occasions but the Swiss star made 44 unforced areas and looked unusually vulnerable on his backhand side. Djokovic, meanwhile, displayed steely nerve throughout and despite being broken late in the third set, hit back immediately to break Federer back and calmly serve out the match and reach his second final in Melbourne. “I was feeling extreme pressure,” said Djokovic afterwards. “It’s one of the best matches I have played in a while. I had to take my chances. Second set I was 5-2 down. If I had lost that set God knows what direction the match would go.” The 23-year-old won his only grand slam title to date Down Under in 2008, where he broke the dominance of Federer and Rafael Nadal after one of the pair won every Major since Marat Safin’s triumph in Melbourne in 2005. This will be Djokovic’s fourth appearance in a grand slam final. In 2007 he suffered a straights set defeat to Federer at the US Open and two years later he lost to Rafael Nadal in four, again at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic added that he expects a difficult test whoever he faces in the final. “I look forward to watching [the second men's semi-final] from my bed with some popcorn,” he said.
