Hello there,
I am writing to inform you of a project that I have just recently
begun, called
JApacheConf (at the moment, at least...), which is to be a Java-based
configuration
tool for the Apache Web Server. I am hoping to create a GUI similar in look
and feel
to MS Visual Studio 6 - ie, a toolbar at the top, editor below (with the
option of two
panes, for 'clean' and 'dirty' options, so users can see exactly what
they've done), at
each side of which will be two further panes, containing
directory-structure-type
listings of enabled modules, .htaccess files and options, and heirarchical
information of
any sort from all the various files. The first version (0.1) will use a
plain text editor
interface to implement changes, and once this is deemed to work correctly, I
will start
work on the Graphical part - users will, by version 1.0, be able to tailor
the editor
environment to their own level of expertise, from wholly point-and-click to
purely
text-based. Also, since it is Java-based, a startup scripts will be written
allowing the
program to function as either an application or an applet (using the
<OBJECT>/<EMBED> tag pairs to make use of Sun's own Java plugin).
The program is being written with the aid of Java 2 (formerly JDK1.2),
and will be
compatible with any platform which has a Java 2 JRE (at the moment this
means
Windows/Solaris, but Sun have changed their licensing to an
almost-open-source
model, so by the time this is finished, there should be stable ports to most
UNIXes,
including Linux).
The main reason for this mail is to encourage people to contact me with
any ideas
that they have for such a project, or anything that they would like to add
to the wish
list. I would welcome any and all correspondence, which should be sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I will also be adding a page to my website over
the next few days, which will be in the products section of my site - this
is at www.javaccino.com.
I will try to keep latest news posted there.
Yours,
Jim Dovey, Javaccino Development (http://www.javaccino.com/)
