In my opinion it should be ${TMPDIR:-/tmp},
this is the way it is done in all modern enough systems,
including all living BSD branches.

Also I want to point, that pkgsrc provides patches for Guile
and related packages, see here, for instance:

http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/pkgsrc/lang/guile/patches/

It targets mainly NetBSD, DragonFlyBSD (two primary platforms),
and Solaris, though FreeBSD, MacOS X, HP-UX, IRIX, and AIX (and
even GNU/Linux) are taken into account too.  It would be nice, 
if patches found their way into the source itself.
