Pushed a variant of v3 as 65e862d1a2914ad61201236c155058bcf33b5b9c to master.

Changes: Uses the tempdir also for the "vendor" directory - this allows us to 
avoid chmod of the checkout directory (which contained the "vendor" directory 
previously).
