DVD Code Broken Again - 03/09/2001
Keith Winstein, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) student,
and Marc Horowitz, an MIT graduate, have written a seven-line program
that enables to circumvent the CSS protection on DVD video titles and
have published it on the Web. The two students say they're out to prove
a point: publishing code that decrypts and plays DVD movies is not a
crime. In their case, they assert it's about teaching copyright issues
and is thus protected under the First Amendment.
The hack comes as copyright defenders, such as the Motion Picture
Association of America and DVD distributors, are fighting both hacker
magazine 2600 and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which argue
that the circumvention of DVD code is free speech and can not be placed
within the scope of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
