Subject: Why Solaris/Unix is better than Win2k

Hi,

I am not trying to start a flame war or an arguement. Actually, in the first
ever flame war i got into i pieced together reasons why i thought Solaris
was better than Win2K. Some were picked directly from Sun's site and others
from my experience. Here is the list. Can you make additions to it? Please
try not to make generalisations as it hard to defend them. I'll be glad to
summarise.

1. Dynamic Domaining - Allows a Sun server to be partitioned into several
independant virtual servers. The resources allocated to each domain can be
dynamically changed as required without any downtime.

2. Dynamic Reconfiguration - Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) provides operating
system services that support hardware features for delivering increased
system management and availability. It allows systems administrators to add,
change, and remove system components without shutting down the system. Many
mid-range to high-end SPARCT systems support a long list of hardware boards
that can be changed without shutting down the system, including: memory and
CPU boards, I/O controllers, network interface cards (NICs), disk drives,
and other SCSI devices.

In many cases, DR also supports multiple paths to one I/O controller or NIC.
For such cases, Solaris software also supports dynamic load balancing and
dynamic switching of paths.

 pbind - Allows a set of processes to be allocated to a set of processors.
This means i can allocate the bulk of CPUs in my box to the CPU intensive
processes and the I/O intensive processes can have the remaining CPUs. This
eases scheduling load on the server. What about NT/2k?

3. Multipathing - Network interfaces can be grouped together to provide
high-availability and redundancy. This means i get upto 800 Mbps bandwidth
using 4x100 Mbps NICs on a single IP. Also, a NIC failure doesn't bring
network down. What about NT/2k?

4. Up to 128 CPUs on a single system as against a mere 8 for a Win2k
Datacentre server

5. Eight-node clusters as against four-node cluster limitation in Win2k
Datacentre server

6. Up to 512 CPUs in a clustered environment as against just 32 CPUs for a
Win2k Datacentre server

7. Security - Role based Access Control brings mainframe security to
Solaris. This means there is no single super-user who can screw up
everything. So the 'root' can do system maintenance but cannot peak into
your companies valuable database content which can be only accessed by the
DBA.

8. Hot pluggable system boards - System boards are boards with 4 CPUs,
memory banks and PCI cards on each board. Any board can be replaced online
in the event of a failure without rebooting the entire system.

9. A backplane bandwidth of 12.9 GB/sec. Can Wintel beat that?

10. Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration - Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration --
also known as Reconfiguration Coordination Manager (RCM) -- provides a
scripting interface for DR events so that application programs such as
database and system management tools can take predetermined actions when
hardware configuration or operating system events occur. For example,
additional CPUs and interface cards can be reconfigured for a database
server backend when the response time falls below defined acceptable levels
without operator intervention.

11. File System Logging - UNIX File System (UFS) logging is the process of
storing transactions (changes that make up a complete file or directory
operation) in a log before they are applied to the file system. Once a
transaction is stored, the complete transaction can be applied or reapplied
to the file system later.
UFS logging offers two advantages. It prevents file systems from becoming
inconsistent, therefore eliminating the need to run fsck. And, because fsck
can be bypassed, UFS logging reduces the time required to reboot a system
when it is stopped other than via an orderly shutdown.

Also, look at www.netcraft.com. Amongst the 50 websites with the highest
uptimes, only one runs on Win2k. The rest run some flavour of Unix. In the
"Most requested websites in the last 30 days" only 12/50 run on WinNT/2k.
