Compensation announced for NRI scheme

PANJIM, JUNE 9 BY HERALD REPORTER

The Goa government has given shape to the scheme that seeks to compensate kin of Goans working abroad, who die due to accident or terrorist attacks. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the kin of the victims through the NRI Facilitation Centre, announced Chandrakant Keni of the NRI Facilitation Centre on Wednesday. The scheme will come into force with immediate effect, with financial aid of Rs 2 lakh each being released to kin of two Goans, who recently died in the terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia. The government has also started with a social security scheme for Non Resident Indian (NRI) Goans. The scheme is to provide adequate financial support to the family of Goan NRIs, who meet with unfortunate events like accidents or suffer due to disease.
Any person, below the age of 70 who is employed abroad can join this scheme under which an accident occurring anywhere in the world leading to death, permanent total disability, or loss of sight of both eyes or loss of use of arms or legs or any two of these organs, are covered upto Rs 5 lakh. The scheme is being implemented through the New India Assurance Company Limited in association with the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre. Acting upon the complaints by many non-resident Goans (NRGs), that they have been neglected by the government, the NRI Facilitation Cell has decided to hold regional conferences for NRGs in major cities.
The regional conferences will be held in cities having high concentration of Goans. Every year about four such regional conferences will be held in addition to the annual conference, informed Keni.
The purpose of the regional conferences is to give a chance to all NRGs to be a part of the happening which is not possible when they are held in Goa. Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, some parts of Kerala have been home for many Goans, yet NRGs are keenly interested in what is happening at their native place. Unlike Goans here associations and unions formed by NRGs are not based on caste, religion etc, stated Chandrakant Keni. The NRI Felicitation centre will release a bulletin on August 15 containing happening in Goa. This newsletter will be released quarterly having news of social, educational, cultural happenings to give NRIs flavour of Goan diaspora.
Promod Shetye, managing director of the Goa State Tourism Development Corporation (GSTDC), will hold additional charge as appointed member secretary of NRI Facilitation Centre. Adolf Mascarenhas joint secretary, home has been appointed as nodal officer of the centre.
