Panaji July 28: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, today assured the House to take up with the external affairs ministry, the issue of Goan expatriates in Kuwait being forcefully sent to Iraq by their Kuwaiti companies.
The issue was raised during zero hour by the Navelim MLA, Mr Luizinho Faleiro, who said a number of Goan families had come to him complaining that their family members working in Kuwait had been sent by their Kuwaiti employers to Iraq where kidnappings and even killings of non-Iraqis was rife these days.
Mr Faleiro said he had learnt that around 300 Goans had been thus forced into Iraq and expressed apprehension about their safety. He said the matter could be jointly taken up by the government with the support of the Opposition.
The Chief Minister was quick to request a list of the Goans who were sent to Iraq. Wherever Goans are in trouble, we will pursue the matter, Mr Parrikar said.
During zero hour, the Mormugao MLA, Mr Karl Vaz raised the issue of striking workers of Western India Shipping Ltd (WISL) and asked the government to intervene in the matter to provide succour to the workers who fear retrenchment and non-payment of dues on time. Mr Vaz said the government is providing water to WISL on subsidy and requested the governments intervention in the matter before the situation deteriorates further.
The Minister for Employment, Dr Suresh Amonkar, said that WISL falls under central jurisdiction and hence the state government cannot intervene directly. He said 315 workers had struck work due to non-implementation of settlement and that negotitations were going on. He assured that if the matter drags on, the government may intervene informally.
The Power Minister, Mr Digamber Kamat, also assured to sort out the problem of maintaining the grades between degree engineers and diploma engineers in the electricity department. He said discussions are on with both groups of engineers and that matter would be sorted out within a month.
The issue was raised by the Aldona MLA, Mr Dayanand Narvekar who said that presently diploma engineers were being treated on par or the promotional avenues of both classes of engineers were same. He said degree engineers belonged to a higher category and ought to be treated as such.
PTI adds from New Delhi: The hostage crisis in Iraq involving three Indians entered the second week today with their Kuwaiti employer claiming that serious negotiations were underway to free them.
We have been informed that the negotiations are continuing... it is a delicate and sensitive matter and patience in such situation is a key factor, the Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr E Ahamed, who is heading the crisis management group (CMG) to deal with the hostage drama, told PTI tonight.
The CMG met for nearly three hours to review the situation.
Mr Ahamed said Kuwait and Gulf Link transport company, employer of Mr Antaryami, Mr Tilak Raj and Mr Sukhdeo Singh, has conveyed that the hostages are safe and are being looked after well. I hope that there will be a positive outcome in these negotiations.
