| 'Save our club!' |
THE news "Young Goans Club facing shutdown" (GDN July 19), came as a great shock, surprise and grief, which caused me to write this. Goans are peace-loving people. They also excel in various achievements and have the reputation of attaining several marvels in history. The imprints of their hard work could be seen wherever they are encountered. Our older generations perspired in providing a few facilities for the leisure of Goans, such as the various clubs in a cosmopolitan city like Bombay. YGC, established in Bahrain in 1952, is a similar priceless gem of older Goans who are no more in this world. My poignant tribute to the founder members and may their souls rest in peace. Due to this institution, Goans felt a home from home on this beautiful island. YGC was a platform for the families to get together for recreation activities, for sports loving persons to boost their skills, or as an opportunity for artists to enhance their talents and entertain fellow members, for children to have fun and learn various activities and more. Mingling with fellow Goans in the club premises created a typical Goan atmosphere. It was a real utopia to be with our families. But the saddest part is that this all existed for many years until a few committee members took the reins of the club in their hands a few years ago and turned the club into a mess. We of the expatriate community are fortunate to be in a country like Bahrain, where we enjoy all the freedom from the local authority to run the club as per the norms. But we misused this freedom now and then. The present turmoil is a testimony of the belligerent style of running the club. They try to vindicate themselves by bringing the issue of change of premises and the closure of the bar facilities. But even without the bar, activities could have been organised to raise funds. And to raise funds, how smart were they to run a cricket tournament until late night, thus breaking another law of this beautiful country? Many expatriates clubs are also deprived of the bar facilities, but they still survive. They organise shows and other programmes for their members. This was the real time for the test of the committee's abilities to run the club prudently. YGC member |
