Oil spill off Goa, officials say no threat:

[India News] Panaji, Oct 2 : More than 5,000 litres of oil accidentally spilled into the sea from a storage tank in Goa but officials said there was no threat to the marine life.

Police and fire brigade sources said the spillage occurred at the Kharewaddo jetty in Vasco da Gama late Friday when pipelines transferring oil from tanker 'Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon PVC' to the IndianOil Corporation storage facility snapped.

The incident caused panic among the fishermen of Kharewaddo coast, who began to jettison cooking gas cylinders and stoves from their fishing boats into the sea fearing a blast in the area.

Trawlers docked along the jetty were immediately shifted to another location.

Officials from the Vasco and Mormugao ports and local residents pitched in for the cleanup operation to prevent the area from getting polluted.

"We do not know the exact quantity of the leakage, but there is no threat to marine life," Goa Fire Service chief P.K. John told IANS here.

"The film of oil on the water has completely gone. Earlier there was some accumulation (on the water surface)," he said.

But the extent of the damage would be known only in the course of the next few days when dead fish and other marine life are washed ashore.

Police have arrested four senior IndianOil Corporation officers for being negligent.

PANAJI: Petroleum products leaked from pipes into the sea while being discharged from a vessel to the Indian Oil tanks in the port town of Vasco Friday evening causing major alarm among fishermen and the local people.

Police said they have filed cases of offence against four senior officers of the Indian oil corporation and the discharge operations from the vessel that had come from Jamnagar (Gujarat) has also been stopped.

Fishermen returning to Goa shore detected the spill into the sea and raised alarm. BJP MLA, Rajendra Arlekar and a former minister Jose Phillip D Souza residing in the locality helped mobilise the authorities for a clean-up action and also prevent any further pollution.

Police sources said while some 3000-5000 litres of kerosene spilled into the sea, the oil leak has been neutralised for which concerted efforts by the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), fire brigade and oil company authorities continued till the early hours of Saturday morning.

The deputy conservator of MPT, Anil Panjwani said the leakage took place from the vessel `Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon PVC owned by the Shipping corporation of India. The cargo was for Hindustan Petroleum and was being transferred to the IOC tankers as they have more capacity to store.

The leakage has once again led to queries about the safety of the pipelines at the oil terminal that supplies fuel to major installations in the coastal state.  (courtesy: TOI)
