Struggling young model wins Miss Goa title

A 19-year-old struggling model from Goa won a prestigious beauty pageant on Saturday.
Mellisa T.Fernandes defeated 42 other contestants to be crowned Miss Goa at a glittering ceremony in the state's capital, Panaji, a popular tourist hub.
"It was my confidence which took me to win this title. I think I was confident enough. I worked hard on the talent round and especially the question and answer round," Fernandes told reporters after being crowned.
The contest, held amid the backdrop of a setting sun, dances and music, traditional constumes and lots of domestic and foreign tourists, provided a major boost to the state's already flourishing tourism. The highpoint of the event was the swim suit round where all the contestants mesmerised the audience with designer beach wear.
Beauty pageants in India are a stepping stone towards stardom, mainly consisting of films and modelling. India has given four Miss Universe's and seven Miss World's, a prestigious platform which not only brings success but a lot of fame and money in the winner's life. Most of top actress today are winners of beauty pageants either held in India or abroad.
