| Goa enthralls tourists with celebrations | |
While the film festivals are the main attraction for tourists in Goa, the side events are proving to be a big draw as well. The visitors to the city were in for a welcome treat as they witnessed lakhs of people converging on Old Goa for the death anniversary of St Francis Xavier. In the state's biggest religious event, devotees queued up to kiss the sacred remains of the saint which is being kept in public view after 10 years. It was clear that Francis Xavier, who died more than 450 years ago, continues to live forcefully in the hearts of so many men and women, irrespective of the faiths of the people. "We are Hindus, but we have great faith in St Francis Xavier," said one visitor. Films galore Tourists and the Goan diaspora, who have arrived for the exposition of the sacred remains of the saint are soaking in the festive mood in the city, as Goa was in the midst of its biggest cultural event being held just 12 kilometers away. The heartwarming film from France, The Butterfly, was screened in the International Film Festival of India on Friday. Even those cinema lovers, who were unable to avail of tickets at the Festival venue, there was a full week of beach screenings at Miramar beach. Similar beach screenings are being organised in the other beautiful beaches of Goa. With blockbusters like Mission Impossible and Dhoom being shown it can be truly said that the beaches are sizzling for those in Goa this year. |
