Canned in a day
Forget star tantrums and shooting schedules, our correspondent tells you how to make a movie in just 24 hours

nullMumbai, December 8, 2004: IN Western numerology, 24 is deemed a lucky number. 7 is spiritual. At the 35th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in Panaji, the two combined to be blessedly fortunate.

All thanks to 24x7: Making Movies, an initiative that encourages young film-makers (upto 24 years) to make a movie within 24 hours and screen it. Kicked off in 2003 at the Kala Ghoda Festival in Mumbai, Panaji was only its second birthday.

Talking 24

Concept Youngsters make a short filmbetween 24 seconds to 24 minuteswithin 24 hours. The applicant has to be 24 years or below even if their crew is older
Entries 24 last year, 40 this year
Eligibility On the basis of script
Award For best film

But even two years seems old enough considering that one of its projects has been short-listed for this years Cannes film festival. I cant divulge much, but the name will be announced at the closing ceremony on December 9, informs film-maker Dev Benegal, whose brainchild the concept is.

Yet, for the 200-odd selected participants of the 40 teams from across India, the experience, Cannes notwithstanding, has been the driving factor. Indescribable, gushes Sukanya Ghosh (21), a second-year editing student from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. We did everything from scriptwriting, casting, cinematography to editing for our film Some Like to Dance ourselves and within the stipulated time, adds her cameraman Anil Esram (25). Needless to say it was a back-breaking, hunger-ridden and sleepless 24 hours.

For Rishad DCruz (23), a freelancer in UK- and Mumbai-based advertising agencies for the last two years, directing The Filmmaker led to a wealth of information Ive never experienced before.

Its a simple concept, explains Benegal. We decided to give youngsters a platform to make a movie timed anywhere from 24 seconds to 24 minutes, within 24 hours, with all the equipmentfilming and editing provided on the spot. We screen the films the next day without any censorship, he says.

Demographics have taught us that while movie watchers are in their 20s, those in the business who make the decisions are in their 60s. And theyre making films with outdated ideas
Dev Benegal,
film director

Why 24? Its the heartbeat of a filmthe speed at which a film runs, explains Benegal, the maker of crossover films like English August and Split Wide Open.

Co-curator Anuradha Parekh adds, The initiative is to boost new talent, and fresh ideas. Bollywoods wrongly taught us that a certain subject can be displayed in only one way. So here we gave the 40 teams a single topic, Nature and Violence and received 40 original interpretations.

The variety of interpretations was visible in the diverse assortment of films made within those busy 24 hours. Robin DCruz (21), a director with Firestorm Productions, Pune, made Bali, A Sacrifice. It narrated the story of a woman whos suffers domestic abuse and turns violent. We even bought a pig and tied it up to show this, says producer Radhika Dossa (31). Nitesh Jain (19), a student of Zees Institute of Creative Arts, Mumbai, made the animation film Day After, What If.

These films have reinforced our belief that the only thing talent needs is a little encouragement, smiles Benegal.
