Rights activist Leonor dead

 � Goa�s first female editor and a champion of civil liberties both during the erstwhile Portuguese rule as well as after the liberation of Goa, Mrs Leonor de Loyola Furtado e Fernandes passed away on Friday at her residence in Margao. She was 94. She was the daughter of Dr Minguel de Loyola Furtado, who was the leader of the former political party Partido Indiano, editor of "A India Portuguesa", and a physician of repute.
 
The onus of taking over the editorship of the newspaper finally fell on Mrs Loyola Furtado e Fernandes during whose tenure she celebrated 100 years of its inception. The newspaper "A India Portuguesa" later was renamed as "A India". 
 
Besides she was associated with many social organisations including Obras de Protecoes das Mulheres of which she was the president for many years. She was chosen as Goa�s representatives at the Conference of Editors of Portugese colonies during the erstwhile regime of Salazar in Portugal, wherein she forcefully put forward her opinions.
 
The funeral cortege will leave her residence at 3.30 pm on Sunday to Grace Church, Margao.
