Sir,
The writer has failed to grasp what the VCD is all about. It is about the fact that Catholic Religious symbols are being denigrated. Many will concede that there were atrocities committed in the past. What this VCD is espousing, is that present day Catholics in Goa are of the same mould as the Portuguese of the past and they should be feared and be sorted out forthwith, this is what is being propagated.
The fact that the C.M. of Goa is now backtracking should be proof enough, for any one with a little intellect, to know that this was a deliberate ploy by him to create situation to exploit and put at a disadvantage Catholic Goans. This C.M. time and again chances his hand; pushing as far as he can go. He has no inhibitions backtracking and stating that he was misquoted or
that his statements were taken out of text. He has in the past been shown as being disingenuous. One example was when he had to proffer an abject apology to the Courts for having made unfounded statements regarding Judges being in the pockets of some; this was not before many denials and blaming all and sundry for misquoting him.
When will Goans sit up and take notice of what this C.M. is all about? There is no doubt that Goa has progressed under his stewardship but at what cost to the tax payers..........there are as yet unanswered questions regarding IFFI, the cost of building the Cineplex and other costs related to this extravaganza.
Of monies being siphoned to cronies and to the Party's coffers.
Most if not all will concede that past Governments were not better, many will say they were worse! The crux is whether Goans are willing to tolerate Communalism for the sake of progress and ultimately Dictatorial rule, very akin to what Singapore went through under Lee Kwan Yew. C.M. knows all and Goans in Goa have to accept whatever he does. Given an Inch this C.M. will surely take that Yard!

THE educational CD published by the Government of Goa
on Goa�s freedom struggle has stirred a controversy
about the role played by the Catholic community and
the Roman Catholic Church in the struggle. The
secularists, as usual, are trying to rewrite history.
But the facts are very clear. Following two incidents,
which are well-documented, will prove the case. The
first incident occurred in 1954, when Nehru was
preparing to liberate Goa by force. At the time, there
was a mass vigil held by the Roman Catholic Church at
Old Goa in support of the Portuguese rule. Nehru
chickened out under pressure from the US and the UK
and did not send troops to Goa. The next incident
occurred in 1962, soon after Goa�s liberation. Once
again a candlelight vigil was held at Old Goa asking
the �all-powerful� saint to ensure the return of Dr
Salazar, the then dictator of Portugal. There may have
been Catholic freedom fighters in Goan history. But a
number of them and the clerics were solidly
pro-Portuguese.
