Dr Armando Mascarenhas A friend indeed
- BY FR OSCAR QUADROS

PANJIM, JAN 11, 2005 ï¿½ Memories of a deceased in a mind of the living is short lived, as for the breather life goes on, and whatever the past be, is long forgotten, as the human race is engulfed in a task to survive for a day and to cope for the tomorrow. However memory is also the fragrance that emanates from within oneself while recollecting the goodness that the deceased had scattered all round him to give functionalism in ones thoughts and actions without hurting his fellow human being. It is in this avatar that I fondly remember my dear friend, Dr Armando Benedito Mascarenhas, who heralded the beginning of the year 2005 with his sad demise.

I met Dr Armando, not very long ago through a common friend, nevertheless our friendship scaled to new heights within a short span of time. Being a pious man, he would always seek moral counselling which I would gladly dispense. Although he was not a man to mince words against an errant, he was also the epitome of compassion towards the needy and the afflicted. Scholar, physician, angel or villain, Dr Armando maintained his identity with clat. Born to erudites, Dr Constancio Mascarenhas and D Aninha Gouveia Pinto, Dr Armando was inculcated with an intellectual orientation by his mother, who doted on him besides being also subjected to compact but variegated fundamentals for his mental tenacity. Whether he obliged them or not is not an attribute to be analysed, but the truth remains that he once deviated from the normal main stream to indulge himself in Bacchanalian activities, which he fortunately arrested well on time.

As a medical practitioner, graduated from erstwhile Escola Medica Cirurgica de Goa (Goa Medical College), Dr Armando won accolades for his meritorious services among the rural population of Goa, specifically at Divar Island, where he was posted as the Governments medical officer. He was not a specialist in any particular field of medicine but just known as general surgeon. However his diagnoses were extremely accurate and the prescribed drugs well within ones range of affordability. The reason thus, these Islanders and his villagers of Anjuna, always came away touched by his affection and sincerity towards the good of the people. In the autumn of his life, Dr Armando married Jeanette whom he considered as his Rock of Gibraltar. Their union was well endowed with an perfect understanding and comely companionship. Dr Armando had defined her as his friend, nurse, companion and above all his personal universe to maintain a perfect equilibrium of cosmic philosophies.

Dr Armando gifted with an melodious voice, somewhat did not relish to sign in public, but as he has adapted to perform with his electric organ he used to regale his friends to some old but undying melodies.
