Parrikar Govt plunges into crisis in Goa

The Congress-NCP said the Parrikar govt lost its majority after four BJP MLAs quit and two coalition ministers withdrew support.

The BJP-led coalition government in Goa was brought to the verge of collapse on Saturday after four BJP MLAs resigned and the three coalition allies withdrew support to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Speaker Vishwas Satarkar said he had accepted the resignations of three members and is withholding the fourth for personal verification.

Mr Parrikar, who met with Governor S C Jamir late Saturday night, asked that he be allowed to face a trial of strength on the floor of the House, Raj Bhavan officials said. In a day of fast paced political developments which appeared to have claimed the ruling BJPs majority in Goa, the Congress-NCP combine approached the Governor saying Mr Parrikar had lost his majority.

The BJP-led coalition which had a 24-member majority (21 BJP, 3 allies) has effectively lost seven MLAs in a day. The 15-member Congress is now claiming the support of one NCP and three regional allies.

AICC General Secretary Margaret Alva and Dr Wilfred De Souza of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) accompanied by their MLAs and leaders of the United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) met with Governor Jamir to make a bid for the dismissal of the present government.

CMs claim
Mr Parrikar, however, claimed he still had the numbers and he would prove his majority on the floor of the House. I am still the chief minister and I expect the governor to follow Constitutional provisions and ask me to prove my strength in the Assembly, he told the media at a press briefing.

The chief minister accused the governor of playing partisan politics. The lawns of the Raj Bhavan have been turned into a Congress camp, he remarked. The Speakers acceptance of three resignations brings down the strength of the Goa House to 37 members.

Mr Parrikars decision to cut to size his former town and country planning minister Atanasio (alias Babush) Monserrate had triggered a chain of political events.
