| BJP MLA's resignation accepted, claims Goa CM | ||

| Panaji: In the midst of a numbers game, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed on Monday that the assembly Speaker had accepted the resignation of BJP MLA Pandurang Madkaikar.
Addressing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Parrikar said he had been conveyed by the Speaker that the resignation of Madkaikar had been accepted, taking the effective strength of the house to 36.
Mathany Saldhana, whose UGDP party has extended support to the Congress, in a letter to Governor S C Jamir reiterated his supported to the Parrikar ministry. With acceptance of Madkaikar's resignation, the BJP now has 17 members in the 36-member assembly and with Saldhana's support the ruling party reaches the halfway mark. Saldhana, who was paraded before the press, said "I am not a weather cock to jump from one field to another for personal gains... for me politics is about governance and service to the people of Goa and I have decided to support the government in this spirit." Asked how would he prove majority in the house, Parrikar said, "Whatever the numbers might look like now, I will prove my majority on the floor of the house. The Constitution clearly states that the government can rule the state as long as it enjoys the majority in the government." All BJP MLAs were present at the Chief Minister's residence where the cabinet meeting was held. BJP sources said several options were being explored and they were in touch with Congress MLAs who were keen on supporting Parrikar. On the other hand, the Congress camp was agog on Monday morning with news that the Parrikar government was likely to be dismissed and claimed that there would be a Congress-led government in the state. | ||
