MARGAO: A mystery SMS that has been doing the rounds
in Goa for a couple of days has made the local
organising committee ask for more police protection
ahead of Dempo's NFL meeting with Mohun Bagan. It's
the first time the two teams are meeting since
Cristiano Junior's death in the Federation Cup final
in Bangalore on December 5 last year.

Started by one Sunil, the SMS which the TOI also
received here, reads: "Dear friend, please come 1 n
all on 1.2.05 to cheer GOAN FOOTBALL CLUB n condemn d
act of paul n M.B. V prove v r UNITED-TODAY, TOMORROW
n ALWAYS SUNIL."

Laughing it off at first as a wonderful way to market
Tuesday's game, Savio Messias, the GFA secretary,
nevertheless admitted that the SMS had been discussed
by the executive committee on Sunday, and it was
decided to ask for more police personnel at the venue.
"We've decided to ask for the Rapid Action Force,
apart from the regular policemen," Messias told TOI on
Monday.

Crucially, the All India Football Federation
secretary, Alberto Colaco is not around at the moment.
He is currently in Kuala Lumpur for an Asian Football
Confederation meeting, and is expected to return only
on Wednesday.

The AIFF have, meanwhile, appointed Syed Nasir Ali, as
observer to oversee the smooth conduct of the game.
Appeals are being made in Goa for the peaceful passage
of the game. On Sunday, in an unprecedented move,
Dempo Sports Club brought out an advertisement in
local dailies appealing for peace and discouraging any
potential trouble-making from the fans.

Messias said he had heard rumours that people would
bring in stones to throw at the Bagan players, and in
the absence of any frisking and metal detectors at the
gate, trouble could arise.

A musical tribute

Tuesday's Dempo-Mohun Bagan game should be the perfect
platform to launch a paean to Cristiano Junior. And
that's what an enterprising music composer has done.

Agnello D'Costa, a Konkani singer and composer and
Anthony Marques de Siridao, a local radio, TV
personality have jointly produced a music compilation
called Doriant Earthquake. The nine tracks that the
album contains touch on a variety of themes, most
notably an allegory to the recent tsunami earthquake
and the dead Dempo striker.

The cover of the album bears the now-famous picture of
a prostrate Junior, with Ranti Martins and RC Prakash
trying to revive him, while tsunami devastation
occupies the background of the picture.

D'Costa, accompanied by former Dempo goalkeeper of the
1970s, Teotomio D'Silva, who incidentally himself was
paralysed for some months after colliding with a
striker during a tournament in 1977, are trying to
launch the album before the game at the stadium on
Tuesday.
