XVth NYC Rolling Trophy
Soor Grounds to witness a challenging match on Friday

Kuwait: The much-talked-about among Goans in Kuwait - the famous Soor Grounds where one can watch the real drama in action will witness a challenging match on Friday (11.02.2005) between AVC Overseas Association and G.O.A Maroons.

...Many term this first round match as the match-of-the-tournament in the ongoing XVth Edition of Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) Rolling Trophy played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F).

AVC, boasting of an overseas tournament victory in Bahrain this season had a winning streak in the last (Rising Stars organized) 11-aside tournament played at Soor Grounds before they were badly beaten in the finals 2 0 by Kerala Challengers.

Devotedly called by supporters as Real Madrid, AVCs record with Maroons shows a healthy statistics; AVC won the last meeting between the two 1-0 in a semi-final clash of G.O.A Trophy last year.

According to many fans, if mid-fielder Francis Fernandes keeps his cool, AVC may easily put it past Maroons on Friday. Francis has played a pivotal role in all of the AVC victories this season and has provided a great team spirit, camaraderie and leadership in the team. Fluent with both his feet, he is a mastermind in controlling the tempo of a game, but he has one odd tendency though, to drift into squabbles if intimidated by opponents or even spectators, and thus lose concentration in the game.

Other key players in the AVC team are Elvis Camelo (stopper), Godfrey Aguiar (left wing back), Roland Fernandes (mid-field), Agnelo Miranda (midfield), Kevin Vaz (striker), etc. The team strength may be further boosted if deep defender Vincy Pereira (out of action for two months due to an ankle injury) takes the field.

G.O.A Maroons who are the biggest crowd pullers on Sour Grounds have been relentlessly relying upon versatile centre-back James Figueira to guide the team to wins.

There has been no single reliable match winner in the Maroons squad for the last couple of years. Many hopes of the supporters are pinned on playmaker Luciano D' Souza, but the young ex-Central Railway star is yet to find / display his last seasons form. Ian D' Souza (defender), Dave (striker), Elvis D'Souza (striker), etc, are some of the other key players in the Maroons team.

With an overall team strength, AVC looks to be the better among the two teams, but if factual records are to be noted, G.O.A Maroons are known to play better against much superior teams. The Maroons supporters who have made a customary trend to line-up their cars besides the southern touchline and beep at every good move made will want to see their team win and advance...

...Well, except for a few sporting and intellectually literate, not many - a player, supporter, or for that matter, a club official - can agreeably stand face to see his players commit mistakes, watch his team lose, accept referees errors, or sympathize with players on-field emotions ... particularly on Soor Grounds.
