Central literature academy of India has recognized Konkani as being a language with substance & has been included in the 15th schedule of constitution along with other languages there in 1993. Karnataka has almost 5 million Konkanis and Konkani has been declared as the languages of minorities by Government of India & has established an independent academy.
Logically Konkani may be considered as language of Konkan region. Mythologically (according to Hindu mythology) the instance and context of allusion to Konkan region are as follows:
In 9th chapter of Bhishmaparva Sanjay while acquainting Dhratharashtra of different nations/countries, indecates Aparanta and Konkana. In 3rd century A.D a treatise written viz., Deepahamsa reference to two regions exist, using words Aparanta (Uttara Konkana) and also Maharatha (Maharashtra).
According to the opinion expressed by:
Dr.B.A.Saletore, Al Masudi, an Arab geologist who visited this region, states that people of this region spoke a language known as Laariyaha.
In 9th century compendium viz Konkana vishaya, this language is indicated as Loara, Laata. In the copper plate had had written in (1008 A.D) by Rattaraja the last king of Shaalahara dynasty which had ruled Konkana, the language used was Sanskrit with last three sentences in Konkani.
Arab traveler Alberuni visited India in 10th century AD, had opined that at 25 pharaska (100 miles) from Maaraataa Desha existed Konkana Desha and its capital was Taana. Marco Polo, the Italian traveler who visited India later than Alberuni indicated that people in Konkan Desha used an exclusive language.
Different scholars have compressed opinion on genesis of Konkani. They are:
Polyglot Dr. SunitiKumar Chaterji has opined that Konkani is much ancient than Marathi and has originated from pre- Sanskrit version of i.e.Apabramsha.
An oldest compendium was stated to have been written by king of Devagiri viz. Singhana and was found at Chaaleesagaavn which, contains a number of Kokani words.
13th century AD written book Jnaneshwari has a member of Konkani words.
Maharashtrian, Dr.V.P.Chavhan opined that Konkani is more closer to Sanskrit than Maraati. Eg.
I:aham (San) Haanvu(Koa) Mi: Marati.
Prof:S.R.Dalgado of Lisbon University stated that Konkani is an Aryan languages & it resembles primary language. He also stated that Konkani may have been originated by confluence of two Prakrit (invogue) languages Punjabi or Paishachi Prakrit of Konkani and also Magadi Prakrit of North Bihar. According to opinion by Konkani scholar of Mumbai N.D.Soande, Sauraseni Prakrit was promoted by Yadav & Puru dynasties, and brought it into vogue beyond and Dwaraka upto Shoorpaadaka (Gomantaka). Konkani may have developed from this Prakrit and may have spread in this region.
Renowed Konkani knowledgable Devaraya Baindoor Igal opines that Konkanis original from is Apabramsha Prakrit version (roopa) and cities the following example.
Cinder: Angara(Sans) Inglo (konk) Ingala (Apabramsha) likewise, Dog:Shaawana (Sans) Suna (Apabramsha) Sune (Konk), Sister Bhagini (Sans) Bhain/ni (Konk) etc.
