As cantorists join the political cacophony, blue-blooded tiatrists go red

That the tiatr is the best medium to reach out to people that matter has been well understood at least by politicians from south Goa. They are also more than aware that the more than 100-year old stage is more than often used to tunefully criticize them with punchy satirical cantaram.
All this notwithstanding, all along the last decade, the shrewd Goan politician has made use of tiatrists, mostly cantorists, to attract the multitude to their public meetings. There have been times that when noted tiatr artistes have even displayed their brand of histrionics on the dais of a political meeting.
But why do some tiatrists prefer to bend backwards in appeasing the politicians? Its because these politicians sponsor the production of their audio albums, is what most tiatr enthusiasts point out to.
Whether ethics of the tiatr have been flouted, is the other question.
�I don�t mind as far they (tiatrist) do it in their own constituency. But I don�t agree with those who perform at election rallies in other constituencies,� says the showman of the Konkani stage Prince Jacob. �I have been invited to election rallies for the upcoming elections, but I will never go. Its against my principles,� he adds.
The �King of Centuries� Roseferns, although still undecided, says that he �might� join in the electioneering, like he did during the last elections. But the role he played last time was of only delivering speeches. Disapproving of tiatrists performing per se, he says, �For sure, they lower their prestige. A blue-blooded tiatrist will never sing or act at election meetings�.
Former Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo, who is also a celebrated tiatr writer-director-producer-actor-singer, had this to say: �It depends on the individual, and I don�t see any problem. But as far as art is concerned, artistes should be neutral. Because he or she should realize that the audience they perform for on the tiatr stage have varied political preferences. So when these artistes stand on a political platform, they will bring down their image and in the process lose many fans. It is important for tiatrists to realize that they belong to everybody. And inorder to maintain their stature, it is better that they avoid sharing the dais with politicians.�
From flying down singers like Lorna and Nephie Rod from Mumbai, to getting tiatrists compose special songs for the campaign, to cutting an audio album packed with songs dedicated to their exploits, the Goan politician has done it all. All of which was unheard and unseen in the days gone by, points out noted Konkani novelist Bonaventure D�Pietro.
�This trend is disturbing. Tiatrists of yore always considered their art as sacred. This holiness has now been desecrated,� Pietro adds.
While how the creators of the tiatr would react is anybody�s guess, Lucasinho Ribeiro and Joao Agostinho Fernandes must surely be turning in their graves!
