Workshop on learning Roman script for Konkani

Maharashtra Konkan Association of Mumbai had recently organised a workshop on learning Roman script for Konkani. Rev. Dr. Pratap Naik, Director of Thomas Stephen Konkani Kendr (TSKK), Goa was the main resource person of the workshop.

"In this globalisation and internet era and the influence of English language in our daily life there is a need to to study Roman script as an additional script for Konkani apart from using other scripts for the language. This will help us to communicate in Konkani itself over internet and in emails. Also our new siblings who are going away from our Language due to the problem of script may take up Konkani along with them. We not only need to speak in Konkani but also need to teach our children to read and write in Konkani. This only will give bright future for Konkani" said Dr. Pratap Naik after inaugurating the workshop held at Gyan Ashram Andheri East, Mumbai on 22nd May 2005. photo  Fr. Pratap also said that "It is a false assertion that Konkani can not be written in Roman script properly as and only phonetic scripts are most suited for the language. In fact Konkani has 16 vowels and no phonetic language have all these sounds. Hence Konkani can not be represented in any phonetic script with its actual sounds. However if we can alter the script a little bit Konkani can be easily written in any of the scripts including Roman script by teaching actual sounds to the Konkani people."

Later Fr. Pratap taught a newly formed Roman orthography invented by Thomas Stephen Konkani Kendr after consulting with the major bodies and personnels of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. He said that they have retained number of good things from the existing Roman orthography and replaced the unclear or misleading sounds that are represented by present writing method with the better symbols.

After attending the workshop all the participants felt that it is very easy to write Konkani and also they expressed their joy that Konkani can be also correctly represented in Roman script.

In the begining MKA secretary Mr. Cyril Castelino welcomed the participants, poet Ancy Paladka gave an introductory address and explained the purpose of the workshop, Founder of MKA Mr. Leo Fernandes gave vote of thanks. MKA president Mr. Walter D'Souza prisided over the function.

Prominent Kokani writers and artist like Henry D'Paula, Kalasamrat Henry D'Souua,  Jerry Kulshekar, Philomena San Francisco (Goan Poet), Mr. Ron Michael, Journalist Rons Bantwal, Gable D'Souza (Goan writer), Mr. V. D'Silva, Rommy Pinheiro (Goan theatre Artist), Mr. Tony Martis (Goan Artist) and others were present.
