Sunday, June 5, 2005 (Goa): Congress and its allies today swept four of the five by-polls in Goa, and the party is all set to form the new government. With the victory, three months of political turmoil in the state comes to an end. Since January, the Congress and BJP have been locked in a fierce battle for Goa. But after the by-polls, the Congress and its allies have a clear majority of 21 MLAs against the BJP's 18, in a 39-member house. The focus has now shifted to the tussle for the Chief Minister's post. And a name is expected to be discussed at a legislative party meeting on Monday. Among the frontrunners are three former chief ministers:
Voting for personalities Former chief minister Manohar Parrikar said it was not a pro-Congress mandate, and that people had voted for personalities rather than parties. "Those who joined us were either Congress rebels earlier or Independant candidates and joined the BJP later to form the government. These constituencies weren't ours. Our task in these places was difficult, like bringing in new candidates," said Manohar Parriker. "The entire organisation was disturbed. Our voting base was very low and we had to bring it up to 50 per cent. I think we couldn't perform such an uphill task, but in many places we've managed to pull up our voting base," he added. The Congress party in Goa is crammed with at least four former Chief Ministers. And with so many contenders, one thing is for certain, that it's going to be difficult for whoever gets the top job, to keep his flock together. | |
