Subject: Tongue In A Twist - Opinion on Outlook Article

Sir,

The script for Konkani is definitely a needless controversy. As long as
Kannada is the official language of Karnataka it should be used as the
script. Unfortuantely by indulging in not so important debates like
this we are alienating Konkani speaking people from one another. The
literary pursuits in Karnataka is slowly losing its sheen ever since it
was seperated into Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Konkani Sahitya Parishat
and so on. Due to rampant globalization the day is not far when
there'll be only 4 languages English, Mandarin, Spanish and Telugu :).
The least that Konkani speaking people could contribute to overall good
of Karanataka is to use Kannada script for writing.

Tongue In A Twist
Daily Letters | 25 Jun, 2005
Dear Sir,
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademy has taken a right step by selecting Kannada script for Konkani. For your information there are four weeklies, more than 35 monthly periodicals and more than 100 regional bulletins that are published in Konkani in Kannada script. This script is used extensively by all sects of people in Karnataka for reading and writing. I have not spotted a single magazine that is printed in Devanagiri script in Karnataka. Konkani in Kannada script stands first in its literary books in Konkani that has the history of 125 years. Only in Kannada script of Konkani we can spot several novelists who have written more than 50 novels. Also the literature in this script is quite popular and widely accepted by the people.

Outside Karnataka and Goa the script that has potential for Konkani is only Roman script. Konkani speaking people of both these states, who migrate from their homeland, make use of only English periodicals, journals, books and newspapers for their reading. Negligibly anyone reads the periodicals in Hindi, Marathi or other Devanagiri script periodicals. Thus though they may speak several Indian languages that uses Devanagiri script they will not have the practice of reading and writing in that script. Hence this script remains strange to them.

Children of Konkani's who have migrated from Karnataka or Goa go to English medium schools and have exposure to English children's literatures only. Thus here in Mumbai though Konkani speaking people who use Kannada script continue reading Konkani periodicals in the same script their children can not taste them. One more important point to be noted is that the Devanagiri script Konkani has very very minimal readership. The books, periodicals available in major cities of India and abroad mostly belong to Kannada and of Roman script. I have not yet spotted any Konkani periodical in bookstalls here in Mumbai where the Konkani of Kannada script has a vast readership. Thus when Konkani in Kannada script has a bright promising future they should also study the Roman script to pass this treasure to their children specially who migrate to other cities and countries from their homeland.
