Solo singer who outscores

Konkani tiatr world lost its melody king almost two years ago but the void created in his death is yet to be filled.

Indeed there are a host of tiatrists today who are eager to venture into the footsteps of the legendary figure and are aspiring to achieve a name and fame in the singing field.

Meet Aniceto Lawrence from Santa Cruz who is a popular figure on the Konkani stage now-a-days. An ardent admirer and follower of the late Alfred Rose, Aniceto is the son of Antonio and Filomena Lawrence.

Aniceto made a debut on the Konkani stage at a young age of 14 in the tiatr staged in his village, which was written and directed by one Domnic Botelho.

Incid-entally, his father Antonio too was a tiatrist who wrote and directed tiatrs in his village Santa Cruz.

"I often participated in the annual tiatr staged in my village and it was one Peter Barbosa from my village who always ensured that I was allotted an important role in our annual tiatr," recalls Aniceto.

A singer with a pleasant voice, he has successfully scaled the rungs of the ladder of the tiatr world and found a place amongst the professional band of tiatrists today.

"I am immensely indebted to the late C Alvares who roped me in professional tiarts. He was indeed my guru," says the grateful artiste.

Aniceto has acted for some of the stalwarts of the Konkani stage like late Jacinto Vaz, John Claro, late C Alvares, Chris Meena, late Fr Freddy J Da Costa and Pal Soares.

"I have also performed in Alfred Rose’s musical shows and played leading roles in video films of Carlos Fernandes and Mark Araujo," he recalls.

He has performed outstanding roles in the tiatrs of Milagres de Chandor, Ben Evangelisto, Menino de Bandar, Patric Dourado, Felcy, Jr Rod, John D’Silva and Jose Rod.

A solo singer who has outscored many in the field, Aniceto has been a regular figure in the annual tiatr contests organised by the Kala Academy, Panjim, and bagged several prizes.

His two Konkani albums, Ochoriancho Jesu and Rochnnar Dev Nidonk-Na were hits.

"When I decided to come out with my second album, I was desperately looking out for an appropriate title for it. And to my surprise Brother Godfrey who resides in my building gave me the title - depicting Jesus wearing a crown of thorns - at the charismatic prayer meeting," he informs.

A popular solo singer in the tiatrs these days, Aniceto has also rendered songs in the Konkani albums of Jr Rod, H Britton, Socorro de Santa Cruz, Araujo, Candido, Coney-M and Jenny.

Then who does compose lyrics and sets music for Aniceto’s songs? "I do really compose lyrics myself and set music for my songs," he assures.

"My parents have really been a source of inspiration for me as they always encouraged me in all my ventures," he says proudly.

Aniceto has rendered the title song in the VCD of the Archdiocese of Goa, which was released on the occasion of the Exposition of the Sacred Relics of Goencho Saib this year.
