The disqualification of Matanhy Saldanha and the quick
declaration of bye-election in Cortalim constituency
is another sham of political chicanery. It is clear
that the Congress has orchestrated this plot to get
rid of Matanhy, which was on top of their agenda. The
game plan of the Congress has always been to purchase
MLAs and in Matanhy since they could not do so, worked
to get rid of him through political mischief. They
found an able friend in Radharao to execute their
plan to perfection. Thanks to their complete control
at the State and influence at the Centre.
Opinions published in the media have centered around
the logic of Party discipline vis a vis the anti
defection law, and some have prematurely justified the
outcome. I t is essential to understand that Party
discipline must also conform to the principles of
Democracy.
In the case of Matanhy the real question is: whether
any office bearer of a political Party, without
sanction from majority of the members and office
bearers is entitled to issue a whip. The recent
contradictory press statements from the UGDP office
bearers prove otherwise. In such a case, the person
responsible for mischief must be brought to book by
the electorate for causing irreparable harm in terms
of development and unnecessary elections that drain
public funds.
