Siolim United outclass Evoau to stay on top in DSS football

DUBAI — Siolim United defeated eleventh-placed Evoaut 5-1 in the Open football tournament of the DSS sports events at the Sportzone, Modhesh Fun City here on Tuesday. The win put Siolim United, managed by Ignatius Fernandes, at the top of the 14-team tournament. Shriram Vernekar and Ireneu gave Siolim United a 2-0 first-half lead with  Clifford and Shriram a goal apiece after the break for a 4-0 lead. Ireneu struck again before Zoltan scored Evouaut’s consolation. Siolim United will now face eighth-placed Oldies in the quarter-finals today at 8.50pm.

St Anthonys Pernem pipped Dnata Ramp Services 4-3 in a thrilling encounter. St. Anthonys, managed by Patrick DeSouza, went in front through Darryl in the second minute but Dnata hit back for Mohammed Ali to put them on level 1-1.  Darryl was on target again to restore St. Anthonys’ lead but again Dnata drew level 2-2 after a brilliant goal by Abdul Reza Ibrahim before the recess. Dnata, led by Said Moufid, however, stunned their opponents after the break when Ghaffour scored to put them 3-2 in front.

But Creighton Travasso equalised after a superb move and a fine shot to draw St. Anthonys on level 3-3. But just as the game was heading to a draw, Lawry grabbed the winner with a minute left after a fine initiative with Ossie and Sandy. The victory put St Anthony into second place  and will now meet Modhesh Fun City in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9.30pm. Dnata, who slipped into third position, will lock horns with Panjim on Saturday at 8.50pm.

Vaxim Divar, led by Russel Rodrigues, dropped to fourth position after they were held to a 4-4 draw by a youthful Panjim team. Noel and Keegan scored for Divar in the first-half while Russel Rodrigues and Randel Pereira were on target for Panjim. Colin and Orlando scored a goal each in the second-half to put Divar 4-2  into the lead.  But Noel came to the rescue of Panjim with two spectacular goals to snatch a thrilling 4-4 draw to put them in the quarterfinals. They will meet fifth-placed Gmmos on Saturday at 8.50pm.  Modhesh Fun City made it into the quarterfinals after routing Desert Cubs 11-0 in a near one-sided match. Modhesh will play St Anthony Pernem in the quarters.

Panjim overcame Mapusa Fives 4-3 in the last match of the night.  Two goals by Naval and one by Shaun gave the Panjim lads a shock 3-0 lead before Julius reduced the scores. Julius scored again after the break and Renault’s effort put Mapusa Five on level 3-3. After a proloned tussle, Keegan capitalised on a defensive lapse by Mapusa to grab the winner for Panjim. The tournament is organised by Gulf International Promotions.
