| Club plans comeback |

A call has gone out to the public to help the 'homeless' Young Goans Club (YGC) get back on its feet. What was once one of the most popular expatriate social clubs in Bahrain is now in a desperate bid to revive its once thriving membership. It has been without a premises since it was forced to vacate from its Hoora location, near the Omar Khayam Hotel, following an order issued by the then Labour and Social Affairs Ministry in March last year. The club received many complaints from neighbours, who strongly objected to the selling of alcohol at the bar inside. The YGC also ran up a debt of up to BD7,000 last year, but officials today assure that it is now in the clear. Formed in 1952, the YGC is one of the oldest expatriate clubs in the country and has in the past been at the forefront of several charitable, cultural and sporting activities. The Hoora premises was the club's second. It was asked to shift from its earlier location in the Shaikh Abdulla Road, in the suq area, in February 2003, after spending 50 years there. Neighbours had also complained then, saying that the club was located too close to a mosque, which has regular religious processions. "We are currently still looking for premises around the Gudaibiya area, since it would be convenient to the majority of our members," club president Cassius Pereira told the GDN yesterday. "We want to be at the service of the Goan community and also to assist in charitable causes. "We want to set up a place for our members and their families to get together as a community and spend their leisure time together relaxing and meeting friends. "We are a very peace-loving community and in accordance with the government rules, our bars have been shut down." Mr Pereira said the club still gets support from its oldest members. "The major problem is finding a place," he pointed. "Having neither a place of our own, nor any activities dissuades members from renewing their subscriptions." The club has about 600 members, many of whom are considered inactive. Sponsors of club events are also hesitant to offer support because they are deterred by the lack of a venue. "Our short-term goal is to set up a premises and basically expand from there," said Mr Pereira. Despite this, the club still organises and convenes the May Queen contest every year at various locations. This year it was held at the Palace Inn in Adliya. "People often have a wrong notion about us despite our cultural and sporting activities," said Mr Pereira. The club has organised several successful Goan activities such as the Bandra Fair last year, for which popular Goan band Tidal Wave was especially flown in, as well as the feast functions of their patron Saint Francis Xavier. |
