Churchill takes on CM over Mopa talk

MARGAO, AUG 29 Saturdays Steering Committee meeting of the Goa International Airport at Mopa chaired by Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane appears to have upset South Goa MP Churchill Alemao.
An agitated Alemao on Monday said that Rane ought to think 100 times before taking a decision to have an international airport at Mopa, saying another airport and that too close on the Maharashtra border would spell doom for the States tourism industry.
Alemao had a dig at the chief minister, seeking explanation over his omission from the steering committee when he is a member of the committee on Union defence.
Telephonically speaking to Herald from New Delhi, Alemao called upon the people of Goa to wake up from slumber and decide whether they want a new airport at Mopa or favour continuance of the existing airport at Dabolim.
The people are asleep. They should wake up on the airport, Alemao said, adding I am with the people if they are
willing to wage a battle to retain Dabolim as an International airport. Tomorrow, the people should not blame the MP for the closure of the Dabolim airport for civilian use, he said.
According to him, the tourism Industry is the biggest revenue generation section for Goa, with nearly 3-4 lakh people directly or indirectly dependent on it for their livelihood.
Has the State government realised the repercussions of a new international airport close to Goas border with Maharashtra. What would happen to the numerous hotels, tourist taxis which employ thousands of Goans? he asked.
Alemao, who is a member on the Union defence committee, says the State government should take a decision to shift the naval base from Dabolim to Sea Bird at Karwar. The shifting of naval base to Sea Bird at Karwar will facilitate constructing a second runway at Dabolim airport, he said.

meeting. And, here the State government is holding meetings to have another airport at Mopa, he maintained.
Claiming that the Dabolim airport was given to the Navy only for maintenance, Alemao said the time has come for the Navy to hand over it over to the State government for civilian use.
