The traditional matoli items being sold at the Banastarim bazar.

Panaji Sept 5, 2005: The city market today witnessed large crowds of people moving out for the Ganesh Chaturthi shopping, the purchase trend mainly dominated by the steady market prices. The people were found making festival purchases pertaining to various items ranging from pulses and sweets to decoration articles and pyrotechnic products. The traditional matoli items in particular, which consist of various vegetables and fruits and are used to adorn the ceiling in front of the Ganesh idol are available at comparatively affordable rates, may be because of their abundant growth resulting from the good rain.

The decorative articles made from wood, thermocol as well as plastic, and used for the makhar or seat for the idol are also available in wider varieties, in the market. A sweet mart owner told this paper that kaju modak are in much demand, as usual. “In fact, this year we have offered choices in kaju modak for the customers,” he said. The traditional edible items like nevryos and kaju ladoos which are normally prepared in the households during the festival are now available in the market. The flowers are also in much demand, especially for the Haritalika or Tay celebrations, tomorrow, wherein Gauri will be offered puja by the ladies of the house. The other in-demand items are traditional musical instruments like ghumot and shamel which are mainly used during the aartis or prayers of Lord Ganesha and other deities. The popularity of aartis has resulted in the market flooding with aarti cassettes and compact discs, brought out by local music houses like Sinaris.

Besides crowds thronging the market place, customers were also seen in large numbers visiting the city co-operative stores. Some of the co-operative stores have offered attractive prizes through lotteries, over purchases made by the customers amounting to a certain value. Few of the joint families have also made the festival purchases at special bazars held at Mapusa and Banastarim. Since there is also a practice of making purchases of electronic goods like cassette players, CD players, washing machines, refrigerators, television sets and so on during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, many electronic shops have come up with attractive schemes and discount offers for the customers. The exuberance displayed by the people while shopping for the festival, reflects rare times when the hike in prices has not preceded the annual happy occasion.
