Five selected as ‘Goa Scholars’

— The Government of Goa has selected five candidates as ‘Goa ScholarsÂ’ under the ‘Goa Scholars Scheme 2005-2006' informed Dr B A Gomes, Director of Higher Education while addressing a function at the Secretariat hall in the city today.  
The candidates include, Shruti P Mahambre, who is presently studying as research scholar for PhD at IIT Powai; Abhijit V Joshi who is doing his MS in Aerospace Engineering IIT Chennai; Nicolle Fernandes, research scholar for PhD in Nutrition at Texas WomenÂ’s UniversityÂ’ Gaurav Manik Kamat doing his MBA degree at Vinod Gupta School of Management at IIT Kharagpur and Rukma V Prabhu Verlekar who is pursuing her M Tech at IIT Powai.  The Education Minister, Luizinho Faleiro felicitated the parents who were representing the candidates as the candidates who are currently pursuing their education could not attend the felicitation.  Faleiro said, “We feel proud to see Goans who have climbed higher rungs of the ladder abroad. Goa should be a knowledge-based destination.”However, he informed that this year there has not been a single student from Goa who has got admission to IIT. He added that in Goa
 the government is coming up with policies in various sectors such as IT, biotechnology etc.Dr Gomes said the selection of candidates was done by a government appointed panel consisting of eminent educationists and management experts from Goa and outside Goa.  Dr Gomes further informed that the scholarship under the ‘Goa Scholars SchemeÂ’ carries a one time scholarship of 15,000 USD per year for studies abroad. For studies in India the scholarship amount is Rs 2 lakh a year (upto two years). There were 31 candidates for the Goa Scholars Scheme 2005-2006.
