The Khaleelis are a typical modern day family where the traditions are kept intact even while embracing Western lifestyles. 

  





 
They live in a house named ‘Lalehzar’ or ‘Garden Of Tulips’. Zaki Khaleeli is from Bangalore and had his schooling from St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School in the City. Shenaz is from Mumbai. So, where and how did Zaki and Shenaz meet? Abbas, who is in the Standard IV in Sophia High School, says,” It’s a long story,” to which Zaki adds, “It’s their favourite bedtime story, how their mum and dad met.” “I never wanted to get married and was the president of what was then a famous single’s club called the Friday Single’s Club. My mum was getting desperate. Finally my meeting with Shenaz, who was from Mumbai, was set up at The Paradise Island in the West End. It poured that day and we sat at the bar getting to know each other. 
 
At first, we exchanged cards in a very business-like manner. When it was time for Shenaz to leave, my mum was wondering what the outcome of our meeting was,” says Zaki when Abbas interrupts,” I know what happened next. That’s when dad said, ‘You are looking at Ms Khaleeli’.” “Then Zaki’s mother brought an engagement ring which she had kept for the special day,” Shenaz chuckles. “Chocolates and flowers followed and there I was going back to Mumbai with this ring on my finger, wondering if it was all a dream,” she says. “ We went to Goa for honeymoon and I loved it. It was there that I learnt to ride a scooter.” Shenaz says. Has she ever had regrets about leaving the big bright lights of Mumbai for Bangalore? “I have never had any regrets. I love Bangalore and its laid-back atmosphere, but I never understood why the roads were so dark. We had a very hectic social life as Zaki knows everyone and the lack of privacy took some getting used to.” 




Shenaz and Zaki come from totally different backgrounds. Zaki belongs to the Gujarati Muslim community who have a very conservative culture.” We have retained our Iranian roots,” explains Zaki,” but are totally westernised. We still speak Persian at home and the kids find it odd that we don’t speak the same language. Even our food is so different but since we are both great foodies, it never mattered.” “I am grateful to Zaki’s family. They have been very supportive and I got the opportunity to work because of them,” says Shenaz, who is the head of Regulatory Affairs at Strides Arco Labs. Zaki belongs to the third generation running a family business of textile dyes and chemicals. “I juggle several hats, dabbling in the stock market at times and a bit of real estate also among other things,” Zaki says. ”Because of my flexible timings, I am there when the kids get home and I love spending time with them.” Abbas explains his fascination for Beyblade and is all excited
 about his sports day coming up. Pretty little Ain enjoys her dance classes at the Alliance Francais and volunteers with the information that she is also racing on sports day. This is a modern day Bangalore family, so typical with its large dose of old world culture but modern enough to listen to the kids.
