Estevam humble mighty AVC in All-Goa football

DUBAI Sports, as most people will agree, is a great leveller. Thats the magic of it. Sometimes, even the impossible happens. The Professional Golf Association often runs an advertisement that states: Anything is possible.
Its always good for the game when minnows humble giants. It creates folklore. That in turn helps youngsters chase a dream. Now, no matter what happens next St Estevam players will remember October 15, at least, till the end of Ramadan.
For on Saturday evening, St Estevam Parma Foodstuff added a new chapter to the second All-Goa Inter-village football tournament, organised by All-Star Entertainment and United Goans.
Making first use of the pitch at the Iranian stadium, St Estevam stunned mighty AVC Clipsal 1-0. It was a humbling experience for one of the veteran Goan teams of Dubai.
And the toast of St Estevam on Saturday was Sean Fernandes, who managed to put the ball to the back of the net in the first half. Of course, AVC came out fighting in the second half.
They toiled really hard in search of that equaliser through the hard-working Agnelo, Jonathan and Socorro but the strong defence of St Estevam led by Joseph held them back.
At the other end David, Raymond and Sean combined well but could not increase the tally for St Estevam. AVC missed a golden chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty. It just wasnt AVCs day as Ernest shot the ball high above the bar.
You could see AVC shoulders slumping after that. Dejected, AVC failed to mount a serious challenge after that. Sean Fernandes of St Estevam was, of course, judged Man of the Match and Ton Alphonso, team manager of Aldona United presented him with his trophy.
The other match of the day saw Pernem and Raia share points with a 1-1 draw. Pernem had to fight hard to earn that point. Raia went into the lead as early as the seventh minute when the efforts of Lester, Jerson and Franky paid off with Santano scoring.
Baylon, Jerson and Cedric combined well for Pernem. To the delight of the fans, Pernem were back in the match when Baylon scored the equaliser in the 18th minute.
From then on both teams went in for the kill but some good defence and alert keeping kept the attackers from either side at bay. Sandy Fernandes of Pernem was named Man of the Match and he received his trophy from Savio Madeira, team manager of FC Siolim North Tours.
Today, Calangute takes on SFX Old Goa in what should be a highly entertaining encounter and that match will followed by Chinchinim matching their wits and skill with Zuari.
The Goans get their support for this tournament from Vanxim Divar, Woodwork Engineering Services Middle East Ltd., Modern Design Contracting Company, Gulf Ocean Lights, Refrigerate Equipment Enterprises, Al Rubaiya Z Construction and Building Materials, and Emirates Flight Catering Dubai. Man of the match awards are being sponsored by Nelson Silveira, the team manager of Vanxim Divar.
