photo The Holy family choir, a wing of the Holy Cathedral-Kuwait held it’s silver jubilee celebrations on Thursday, by holding an annual parents day concert in the church hall premises. The choir, which has completed 25 years of servixce to the church, received accolades from Vicar Apostolic of Kuwait Bishop Francis Micallef. Speaking on the occasion the Bishop congratulated both the past and the present choir members for their contribution to the liturgical celebrations and requested that all choir members of varied services must conform to the guidelines and recommendations given by the church.

Since the parents’ day function was also an important highlight of the evening, Bishop Micallef advised parents to raise their children with good values, and build an atmosphere of love and mutual respect at home.

Fr. Dominic Santamaria who christened the group way back in in June 1980 and is the present day spiritual director of said, “this is a very unique date in the history of the Holy Family Choir. The efforts of both the past and present members must be appreciated. Despite the busy schedules of the members, they have put their heads and hearts together to give the audience some wholesome entertainment.”

He added that the choir has lived up to the expectations of the parish and they have always strived to bring more meaning to life in Kuwait, through their cultural activity such as the parents’ day.

Religious and moral values are barely given any importance in society today and Father Dominic emphasised that not just the choir members but all parishioners and people of all faiths must have their basic rights and make God the maxim of their lives.

photo The event commenced with a welcome song by Jonathan who was later joined in by other members on the stage, which was followed by a cake cutting ceremony. The priests were also honoured with mementos as a token of appreciation.

The parish hall encompassed an excited audience of children, teenagers and parents who had gathered for the silver jubilee celebrations. Monica Fernandes, a 16 year-year-old student said, “I’m excited about the silver jubilee celebrations and am very fond of the church choir. Besides I never miss the parents day concert and am sure this will be a memorable one too.”

The annual parents day musical programme titled, ‘Love, sacrifice, and betrayal was the combined effort of each and every choir member, who put in a fantastic performance and displayed their skilful talents-be it through the skits, songs, dance and mime. Mario Fernandes, choir maestro and director of the musical programme said, “The choir is grateful to the guidance of Bishop Micallef and Father Dominic who have been the beacon of hope and a source of inspiration through good and turbulent times. We are jubilant to be part of such a vibrant team. The choir is a culmination of not just soulful singers and musicians but the members are also multi-talented in varied aspects.”

photoSpeaking on the central theme of the programme, that included a skit, which portrayed an alcoholic boys attitude towards his parents, Mario said, “The skit is targeted at today’s young generation who are often misled by the company of vicious Friends and consider their parents to be foes. Unfortunately children fail to see what’s right and wrong and label parental guidance as undue interference. Children must understand that as parents we have a certain responsibility towards them,. We make infinite sacrifices to build a beautiful future for them. But it’s disappointing when your own children let you down by crushing your efforts without a word of thanksgiving.”

The musical programme indeed succeeded in conveying it’s message to the audience gathered in large numbers. Steve Rego, a 19-yer-old said, “Although the programme is a mix of the regional language Konkani and English, that did not deter it from conveying a social message. The skit was very thought provoking. It is true that most youngsters are influenced by their friends and detest the good guidelines made by parents, but this trend must change and the skit is a good medium to convey the same.”

photo Cheryl, Esperanca, Laurie M, Mario, Sylvester and Thelma impressed the sudience with their breathtaking performance. Elsa a 42 year-old-parent said, “Sylvester can captivate you with his singing and Mario has a perfect sense of humour.” She added that on the whole all artistes were good, but some create the major difference. However what took the audience by a big surprise was the special appearance of the Bishop himself in a role of an Arab from Saudi Arabia.

photo The Bishop, who retired recently and will be departing to Malta, left an indelible imprint on the minds of the audience through his hilarious performance, which will also be his last in Kuwait. Master Elrich Miranda also left the audience spellbound by singing the legendary Alfred Rose classic, ‘Mandovi’. The little lad was a show stealer and even got the audience singing to his tune.

Janet Fernandes, was the mood setter for the evening, while the music was rendered by Philip Gracias, Filipe Menezes, Dennis Gonsalves and Francis Machado.

The Holy Family choir can be heard at the 8 am English service every Friday. The choir also sings for special occasions only on requests made by community members.
