| And Now Konkani Waves in Mozambique... |
|
Daijiworld News Network [DC] Maputo (Mozambique), October 26: Mozambique, which enjoys a great range of cultural and linguistic variety, has survived great traditions despite centuries of Portuguese colonialism. Despite being independent for 30 years after being colonized under the Portuguese colony for about 500 years, still the country has adopted the Portuguese influence, culture and tradition. Konkani speaking Goans were brought to this country by the Portuguese for work, and today, the third generation are born and brought up here. All the elderly people still speak Konkani at their homes and teach their children too. The official language is Portuguese.
Indeed this country has business potential inspite of all the security lapses and problems we encounter on a day-to-day basis. Allen Fernandes, a Mangalorean, a poet, musician, one of the founder members of Borpi Mitr Muscat, one of such zealous Konkani-speaking Catholics who left Oman in August 2003 for Australia on a work contract of 4 years, has been deputed to Republic of Mozambique in the African continent. After getting in contact with the Konkani-speaking people here who love their mother tongue and desire for Konkani activities, Allen has taken the lead to take-up a Konkani event, in the form of a retreat.
Lot of people from Mozambique visit Divine Retreat Centre in Pota to make a retreat. Hence, Allen, who too is a highly religious person, realized that he should act as an instrument of God to get Br Joel Lasrado from Pota to enable all the Mozambicans to do a retreat in their home country, in their mother-tongue. Because worshipping God in mother-tongue, Allen claims, is indeed a great feeling.
English Retreat was held between October 20 and the conclusion was on October 23 with a lovely homily by Br Joel during the Mass. Indeed, his preaching was really a touching one, and people who attended were extremely thankful to God for such an opportunity, Allen says. The Konkani retreats will be held as follows: In Maputo: The Divine Retreat will commence on October 27 and conclude on October 29. There will be a Holy Mass after the Retreat on October 29 as well as a buffet dinner is arranged for all the attendants. Presently 40 Konkani speaking families in Maputo life and are expected to attend the Retreat. If anyone who has not been contacted by the organizers and wishes to attend this Holy event, may contact the organizers (contact details provided below). In Cathembe: The Retreat will commence on November 1 and conclude on November 3. Cathembe is an offshore village of Maputo where most of the fishermen earn their livelihood. Here too, on the concluding day, organizers have arranged a buffet dinner for all the attendants. There are about 35 Konkani speaking families in Cathembe and are expected to attend this Retreat. Br Joel Lasrado, who has been preaching in Pota for the past 12 years hails from Bejai, Mangalore. He has offered his life to God preaching his good news all over the world. We are lucky to have him in the African continent especially to preach in our mother tongue, Allen, an ex-Borpi Mitr member, explains us with joy.
Pedro Rodrigues, the co-organizer from Maputo is whole-heartedly supporting Allens plan to bring Konkani retreat to Mozambique. Further details about the Divine Retreats can be obtained by contacting: Allen Fernandes |
