SamGulf Navelim will have a chance to avenge the defeat of A & E Vasco in the recent finals of Goans Cup tournament, when they open the second leg of Seven-a-side football league for Fr. Felicio Diniz Trophy on Saturday.
The league resumes after the summer break and matches will be played on every Saturday and Wednesday at the Al Qadisiya floodlit grounds in Salmaniya.
At the end of first leg, Navelim remained unbeaten and topped the table with 21 points followed by Vasco on 13 points. Canacona with 12 points are third on the table. The fourth place is shared by Benaulim and Chinchinim with 11 points. Verna (9 points), Margao (3 points) and Tivim (1 point) are the other teams in the league. Melroy Rebello of Navelim leads the goal scorers list with 14 goals to his credit. He also holds the distinction of having scored a hatrick in three successive matches. Verna, Margao and Tivim have roped in new young players in their ranks and are expected to give a tough fight to opponents to climb up the league table.
The draw for the second leg was held at Konkan Singers Club in presence of all team captains and managers. Schedule of matches for Saturday is as follows: Navelim v/s Vasco on pitch A and Verna v/s Chinchinim on pitch B at 7.45 p.m. At 8.45 p.m. Tivim v/s Benaulim on Pitch A and Margao v/s Canacona on pitch B. The league is organised by Bahrain Goans under the patronage of Konkan Singers Club and co-sponsored by Alba and Union Press.
