Yes, for us, Radio (Akashvanni Ponje Kendr) was the only entertainment up to
mid 1980s
. Besides Radio, we used to watch Hindi Movies at Margao Cine Vishant, Cine
Lata and
Metropol and the newest cinema house was Blue Pearl. Some times, we went to
Vasco at Cine
Vasco (near Kamara) and newest one was El Monte (near harbour) plus,
periodically, there
were Hindi Movies Film Shows at our school premises Students Ticket 50p day
time, evening
others Re.1 (Ringo and his golden pistol, Spy & Groom, Dharti, Saacha our
Jutta, Sita aur
Gita, Hati mere Saati, Araadana, janjeer, dharmatma etc etc etc)
So, now you know why sometimes, I write about Hindi Movies etc
As at home, radio was the only entertainment , we listened to almost all
programmes like
Kandllam Ovllam (2.10pm), Chavdder (farmers), Your Favourities, Manazoktim
Gitam (with
Allen cost), Yuvanni (for youth), Kallar ani Mallar (Sundays kids), Portuguese
Ranassaince, Chayagit, Manapasant gite, Bhuim chaffin, Vivida (mixed language
songs)
Tumchi Chiti Amchi Zap (ponch- Nagesh Karmalli?) The News, Batmia,
Konknnintlean Khobro
(Suresh Naik) etc etc
Saturdays night around 9.30 and sometimes Sunday 2.10 pm Lokam Khell (folk
play).
I still remember some the popular plays. Sri Vitorin Pereira (from Utorda
near Lapit
Lino) was our all time favourite. I remember an actress Jorgina., vincy Pereira
etc
Another all time popular lokam Khell was Kunnbi Jaki where Jakis wife Libru
had an
affair with Lorsu and when Jaki return home early she hides Lorsu under pattea
ponda
and when Jaki ask her what that pattem ( bamboo basket) doing there then she
says
Chelleam Ghello pikonk gaila Raw banana (Chellim=Kellim).
I also remember another Khell in which Rose Ferns (king of centuries) also
played along
with Clara etc the name was Tujim Utram Moje Dolle
So, now you know why I have so much knowledge of Old Konkani Songs.
TV ? Never heard of it. But when my Mom went to Bombay for the first time, she
used to
describe us how Botta ede munis ( finger length people) dancing in the TV BOX.
IX Asian Games New Delhi 1982, there was huge Customs duty concession to
encourage people
to buy & watch games on TV, many Gulfies took this advanrage and send some TV
sets back
home but there was no TV telecast or relay in GOA that time at all.
I remember, when GOA TV first started- Relay only (eraly 80s) its Altinhos
Tower was
just 25mtrs high and as such only people near Panaji could watch TV. People
from other
parts of GOA, reception was not clear at all despite installing 12mtrs high
(double
pipes) on the roof of their houses as arial, people used to say TVir Paus
Zoddta ( Its
rains in the TV). It took more than a year (or 2) to raise the TV tower to
100mtrs. I
also remember TV Breakfast programme was first started February 1987. On TV,
we mostly
watched National programmes like The News, Samachar, Serials like Bunyaad,
Karamchand,
Circus (Where SRK Saruk Khan acted) etc. On Sundays, around 6pm Hindi Feature
Film with
Batmea break at 7 pm. and not forgetting the frequent power failures when we
were
waiting outside for the power to come back most of the times it came back only
after the
film was over .
Other commercials breaks popular at that time like I love you Raasna,
Washing Powder
Nirma Boost is the secret of my energy-Kapil Dev , I am a complan boy
Mummy Buk
Lagi Hai- Maggies-Two Minutes Noodles Sar meim dard? Vicks Action 500 HMT
Bulbs
Lux -chitrakaramchea saumderia sabann
We also had Video(VCR) since 1985 where we watched hundreds of Hindi Movies
hired from
Video Library Rs.10 per film.
Cable TV started, I think, early 90s
