Dears, I normally limit my reading of Navhind Time's "Panoroma" [Pan-O-Roma?] to Mario Cabral e Sa's " View from Mandovi". Only ocasionally do I read the other column or guest articles. This Sunday, researcher Jason Keith Fernandes' article, appropriately titled "War of the Konknis", caught my attention even before I looked for my favourite column. Jason writes as follows: .......................................... "Years of research have established how problematic it is to indicate something as "natural" The identification of the natural, the "normal" while an everyday occurence,is really a choice among options open to us. Like many choices, therefore, it is a deeply political act. The politics played out through the choices made in the declaration of the "naturalness" of
Devnagri",are the politics of nationalism." He goes on to add, "The insistence on the use of Devnagri for Hindi is the perfect example of the political choice of script.Used specifically by the Brahmins of Northern India, it was foisted on Hindi, in opposition to the Persian script--then the preferred script of the educated elite in North India--or other scripts like Kaithi, used by the Kayasthas of North India. It is only because of the vociferous insistence on Devnagri, since 1900, that one forgets that Hindi emerged NATURALLY in the Devanagri script only through acrimonious debate and bloodshed. " "Simultaneously, Devanagri was accompanied by its own variant of the language, the new, highly Sanskritized variant which elbowed out not only the Persian-Arabic vernacular, widespread throughout Central India, but also their traditions and, in some cases, their very existence." ................................................................... Those who
are not aware of the history of the Hindi language may do well to study the era of Akbar and Birbal. The Hindoostani language was an admixture of Persian, Urdu, Kathiawari, Bhojpuri and other dialects of the 16th century India created at the insistence of Akbar so that everyone could understand what the other spoke. A more recent example is the "Nagamese"--an admixture of the mutally exclusive 16 dialects of the Naga tribes with Bengali and Asamese that is used by the present day Nagas to talk.[ They write in their official language, English!]. The Konkani used in the Vavradeancho IXTT, GULAB, SUNAPARANT and, now, the GOENCHO ULO is similarly a "bridge dialect" between the Bardesi [North Goa], Shashti [South Goa], Antruzi [Central Goa]and the 'Novo Korar'[Catholic Church's New Testament translation] Konkani, in a conscious effort to reach a larger audience and readership....with a high "level of comfort" for the reader. Writes Jason, further:
............................................. " I do not believe that a person, with a fine intellectual ability like Mr. Uday Bhembre, is unware that the implications of his arguments amount to a frighteningly centralised vision for Goa and a cultural production within the State, with all the fascist and oppressive accompaniments of such a centralised State. I believe he is aware, and prepared, for what the realisation of his roadmap would mean." ..................................................... Akbar created "Hindoostani", the fore-runner of present day "Hindi". That was not good enough. He was a Moghul ..and a muslim to hilt! How could one even think of calling him a "Nationalist" or a nation builder? He was a MUSLIM. Period! The Perso-arabic script was wiped out and the shuddh "Hindi" is now written only in virgin Devnagri. Do not touch. "Affadd asa." No chaste woman is to be touched during her periods. Writes Jason of the attempts of some priests to
bring about "inculturation" of the "Latin Rite" Catholicism in India. " Similarly, the Goan Catholic's little dance of inculturation to be "more Indian", led by some of its simple-minded clergy,is doomed to be a Sisyphus-ian task. They can never be Indian enough." They are CATHOLICS, not Indians. Period. My childhood friend and neighbour, Umesh Mahambre, now Senior Reporter of the Navhind Times, told me just yesterday when I was discussing the "More-Nationalist-than thou" attitude of some goons masquerading as "Desh Premis" in Mala-Fontainhas [not their area of residence!] that my attempt was futile. "You are a Catholic. No one will accept that you can be a 'Nationalist' in India." Our priests can do "aarti" all the way to their graves...without ever being considered as "Indian-enough" unless they reconvert to Hinduism, the NATURAL religion of all Indians. The Moghuls came from Asia Minor, so did the Aryans. The Hindu mythology has epic stories of their
"gods as men and men as gods, who lived and loved violently". This quote, incidentally, is from the poster of "Jason of the Golden Fleece". The Greek mythology and Hindu mythology have quite a few parallels. The much tom-tommed INDIAN-ness of Hinduism is well and truly MYTH of mythology. The Lingayats or Shaivites of Soth India may perhaps be indigenous in their beliefs. Like the native 'Red' Indian tribes of the Americas, they are treated like the outcasts and half breen by the racists from Europe and Asia Minor. [One really does not know where Europe ends and Asia begins. Otherwise ask the Russians: one nation, one country but straddling two continents!!!] Another myth is that the Catholics in Goa are responsible for the colonisation of the state by the Portuguese. 'Admiral' Timmaji Wagh Camotim corroborated with Vasco da Gama from 1502 to 1508 and with Afonso de Albuquerque there after. On arrival of Albuquerque off- Honnavar in 1510 A.D. Timmaji did the
admirable thing of "inviting" Albuquerque to capture Goa from his previous King Adilshah of Bijapur. The Portuguese and Timmaji were driven away in May, 1510 only to come back in November. On 25 November,1510 A.D. Albuquerque came back to Goa with Timmaji Wagh Camotim with logistical and information support from Mhal Pai Vernekar from Ancestral Mardol, near the present day Verna Industrial Estate and Airport Road. Not surprisingly, both these worthies are Goud Saraswat Brahmins [GSB] as are some of the biggest current mine-owners in Goa.....Dempos, Salgaocars, Timblos, etc. What Timmaji and Mhal Pai left incomplete... the rape of Goa for its intrinsic wealth.... they are completing now with COLONIAL PORTUGUESE DEEDS OF CONCESSION to boot! If Adv. Udai Bhembre, Subhash Velingkar and their ilk believe what they say, let them ask their zaat-bhav mineowners to SURRENDER to the Sovereign Government of India all the Portuguese Colonial era concessions and operate on
INDIAN mining leases as done in other states of the Indian Union under the Mining Act and Rules,1994. Let Subhash Velingkar also return the money he has obtained/extorted from the Salgaocars during the Parrikar regime [and the River Princess era] for constructing the Vidya Prabhodini's School and HSS buildings at Vidyanagar, Porvorim. Why preach honesty with a stolen hen under the arm???? Why write in the SUNAPARANT that the Fontainhas people support/are part of the Portuguese "kast". If Goa has illegitimate children of the colonial era Subhash need not come to Fontainhas to see them. All he needs to do is to look in the special mirror that hangs on the wall of his home and say, "Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who is the most illegitimate of them all?" He will see the true image and likeness. Mog asundi. Viva Goa. Miguel Braganza [EMAIL PROTECTED]
