| | 6 states may participate in Mumbai festival | | | Business Standard/ Mumbai December 01, 2005 | | | | | In its second year, the Mumbai Festival 2006 is going to see participation by artists from at least six states. This is for the first time performers from outside the state will be invited to give
the festival a more cosmopolitan look. However, organisers maintain that preference will be given to talents from the city. | | | | Since Mumbai is a melting pot of different cultures by communities who have made the city their home, the festival will be showcasing folk arts of different communities. | | | | Sponsored by the ministry of tourism and commissioner of handicrafts, ministry of textiles, the festival will be a 13-day affair starting from January 14. | | | | The state cultural department will be sending invitations to all the states. However, because of the Republic Day celebrations, the organisers are not sure about participations from many states. | | | | Out of the six zonal cultural centres, only two will be sending their troupes. The central government will be taking care of the expenses. | | | | The west zone centre in Udaipur (Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa) and south central zone in Nagpur (Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh) will be the main players as other centres will be focusing on Republic Day celebrations. | | | | The central government will be taking care of the expenses. However, till now no budgetary allocation has been made as the organisers are not sure about the number of participating states. | | | | The festival coordinators feel that the festival will be able to attract many foreign
tourists. For foreign tourists, the festival will showcase different cultures at one place. On the crafts front, the festival will have 400 stalls showcasing craftworks from all over the country. | | |
