REFLECTION - ADVENT, THE COMING
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Tradition teaches us that we enjoy three comings of Christ: the
first, in the Incarnation, the second His return in glory and the
third into each person's heart. The first coming, the Incarnation,
is the coming of God-Man into time and space. We give thanks to God
as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior. The
second, we in faith, pray for, long for and groan for Jesus' coming
again. The third, the coming of Jesus into our hearts, we can know
and experience this Advent season. The Incarnation, the second
coming and inviting Jesus into our hearts are key interventions of
God. We are charged with cultivating an interior disposition which
desires to grow close to God. This call can find a new and exciting
_expression_ during the season of Advent and Christmastide. The
commercial noise is never so loud than at Christmas. It is as if we
enter into a kind of silly season - in many senses the impulse to
celebrate, buy gifts, exchange presents, enjoy our families and
party even, is integral to our celebration of Jesus' birth.
However, the Holy Spirit invites us all to retreat from this
activity for a while, be still, calm our minds and lift up our
hearts to contemplate the mystery of God who humbled Himself and
was born as one of us. 'The Son of God worked with human hands; He
thought with a human mind. He acted with a human will, and with a
human heart He loved. Born of the Virgin Mary, He has truly been
made one of us, like to us in all things except sin' (Gaudium et
spes, 22).
Our minds are broadened, nourished and expanded as we encounter
through study the beauty, complexity and glory of the created
world. The great mystics and saints of history point to how much
there is to 'wonder' and 'marvel' at in pondering salvation
history. Our hearts and spirits are broadened, nourished and
expanded as we immerse ourselves in the sublime truths of faith.
Advent and Christmastide are wonderful moments in the Church's
calendar to renew our understanding of our faith, to enter more
deeply into the mystery which is Christ and we are refresend,
encouraged and comforted by the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit.
